제가 서울에 대해 항상 놀라는 점이 한 가지 있다면 그것은 서울이 글로벌 도시로서의 역할을 진지하게 다하고 있다는 것입니다. 서울에서 예전에 살았던 동료들에 따르면 과거에는 늘 그렇지는 않았다고 합니다. 하지만 요즘 외국인 선수들이 출전하는 프로야구 경기를 보러갈 때나 벨기에 맥주를 마시거나 태국 음식을 먹을 때 보면, 전 세계가 서울로 진출했다는 것은 꽤 자명한 일입니다. 음식과 스포츠를 제외하더라도, 수도권에 위치한 국제기구나 여기서 열리는 국제회의의 숫자를 보면 이 사실은 더없이 두드러집니다. 저 역시 지금까지 국제백신연구소, 유엔북한인권사무소, 녹색기후기금, 세계은행 한국사무소 등을 방문할 기회가 있었습니다.

2003년 국제백신연구소는 서울에 새로운 본부를 개소했습니다. 세계에서 가장 위험한 일부 전염병의 확산을 줄인다는 숭고한 목표를 바탕으로 새워진 국제백신연구소의 성과로 인해, 수많은 사람들이 목숨을 건졌고 세계에서 가장 취약한 사람들이 질병으로부터 보호받았습니다. 본부가 서울에 자리하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 한국은 운영 예산의 30 퍼센트를 기부하는 가장 큰 공여국 중 하나입니다.

저는 최근 취임식에서 신임 사무총장 제롬 김 박사님을 만났습니다. 김 박사님은 세계에서 가장 뛰어난 의학 연구자 중 하나일 뿐 아니라 미 육군의무군단과 미 공군에서 복무했던 훌륭한 군 경력을 갖춘 분이었습니다. 김 박사님은 가장 성공한 한국계 미국인 중 한 분입니다. 그 분의 취임은 한국계 미국인들의 성공을 다시 한 번 보여주는 사례입니다. 


6월 23일에 저는 유엔북한인권 서울사무소 개소식에 참석했습니다. 자이드 라아드 알 후세인 유엔인권최고대표께서도 참석하셨는데, 최고대표로서 첫 번째 아시아 방문이었습니다. 윤병세 외교부 장관과 더불어 자이드 대표께서도 개회사를 하면서 한국이 국제무대에서 인권에 대해 점점 더 많은 리더십을 발휘하고 있다고 언급했습니다. 유엔인권이사회와 북한인권조사위원회의 권고에 따라 서울사무소가 만들어졌습니다. 서울사무소는 북한 인구 2,500만명에 대한 인권침해 상황을 알리고자 하는 국제사회의 노력을 강화시켜줄 것입니다. 많은 분들이 아시다시피, 북한 체제하에서 가장 많은 고통을 당하는 이들은 북한 주민들입니다.


게다가 2013년 12월에 개소한 세계은행 한국사무소 역시 송도에 위치하고 있습니다. 아시다시피, 또 한 명의 성공적인 한국계 미국인 지도자 김용 총재가 세계은행을 이끌고 있습니다. 지난 4월말에 송도에 있는 국제기구들을 보기 위해 이 두 곳을 방문했습니다.

한국이 역동적인 국가 문화를 갖고 있을 뿐 아니라, 국제 문제를 해결할 수 있는 기술과 능력을 갖춘 글로벌 수도로 부상했다는 점을 보여주는 사례들이라고 생각합니다. 한미 관계가 과거에는 군사동맹을 바탕으로 형성되었지만, 지금 우리는 세계가 직면하고 있는 가장 중요한 사안들에 대해 동등한 파트너로서 함께 일하고 있습니다. 주한미국대사로서 더 나은 세상을 만들기 위해 한국 동료들과 함께 일하고 있는 점을 자랑스럽게 생각하고 있습니다.

One of the things that never ceases to amaze me about Seoul is how seriously it takes its role as a “global city.”  My colleagues who have lived in Seoul before tell me that this was not always the case.  However, nowadays, whether I’m attending a professional baseball game featuring foreign players or enjoying a Belgian beer or Thai cuisine, it’s pretty clear that the whole world has come to Seoul.  Food and sports aside, nowhere is this more apparent than in the sheer number of international organizations and global conferences hosted in the Seoul Metropolitan area.  During my time here, I’ve had the chance to visit several, including the International Vaccine Institute, the new United Nations human rights field office, the Green Climate Fund, and the World Bank regional office.

In 2003, the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) opened its new headquarters in Seoul.  Established with the lofty goal of reducing the spread of some of the world’s most dangerous infectious diseases, the good works of the IVI have saved countless lives and protected some of the world’s most vulnerable people from illness.  The Republic of Korea not only hosts the organization in Seoul but has also been one of its biggest and most generous contributors, contributing 30% of their operating budget. 

Recently I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Jerome Kim, the IVI’s newest Director General, at his inauguration ceremony.  Dr. Kim is not only one of the world’s most accomplished medical researchers. He also has a distinguished military career, serving in both the U.S. Army Medical Corps and U.S. Air Force.  Dr. Kim is truly one of our most accomplished Americans of Korean descent.  His appointment represents yet another success for the Korean-American community. 


On June 23rd, I attended the opening in Seoul of the newest United Nations human rights field office.  For this event, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, H.E. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, made his very first visit to Asia as High Commissioner.  Along with South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se, High Commissioner Al Hussein delivered opening remarks, pointing out the Republic of Korea’s increasing leadership on human rights on the international stage.   The office was formed to comply with recommendations made by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and the Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Human Rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.  The presence of the office in Seoul will bolster international efforts to publicize human rights violations against North Korea’s 25 million citizens.  As many are aware, those who suffer the most under the DPRK regime are the DPRK people themselves.


Nearby, Songdo is perhaps most famous for its successful efforts in attracting international universities to establish campuses here in Korea.  But Songdo is also the host of the Green Climate Fund, showcasing the Republic of Korea’s leadership on environmental issues, particularly the mitigation of climate change.  The Fund is doing innovative, creative, and groundbreaking work to ensure the protection of Mother Earth.  For more on Secretary Kerry’s views on climate change, see here! 

Moreover, Songdo houses the World Bank Regional Office established in December 2013.   As you know, the World Bank is represented by another successful Korean-American leader, Jim Yong Kim.  I had a chance to visit these two wonderful sites in late April to witness this global presence in Songdo.
 

These are just a few examples of how Korea is not just a country with a dynamic national culture; in recent years it has emerged as a global capital with the skills and reach to solve international problems. Whereas the U.S.-Korea relationship was previously founded on our military alliance, we now work together as equal partners on some of the most important issues facing our world today.  As the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, I am proud to work with South Korean officials on these and other issues as we strive to make the world a better place together.

자랑스러운 스탠퍼드대 동문이자 스포츠 팬으로서 저는 어느 종목이든 늘 스탠퍼드 카디널스를 응원합니다. 그래서 이번에 대학 선수들의 올림픽이라고 할 수 있는 광주 유니버시아드 대회에 스탠퍼드대 여자 수구팀이 미국 대표로 참가한다는 얘기를 듣고 매우 반가웠습니다. 이번에 저는 광주에서 유니버시아드 대회 개막식도 관람하고 미국 경기도 두 개 정도 봤습니다. 자세한 내용은 여기에서 보실 수 있습니다: http://goo.gl/jes8SP   


스탠퍼드 여자 수구팀 선수들은 학생 선수로 뛰어난 실력을 갖고 있을 뿐 아니라 한국에 오기 전에 벌써 준비를 많이 하고 왔습니다. 한국의 여러 다양한 면에 대해 폭넓게 공부를 해왔더라구요. 여기 오기 전에 선수들이 각자 한국에 대해 조사를 하고 서로 발표하는 시간을 가졌다고 합니다. 어떤 선수는 역사와 문화를, 또 어떤 선수는 시사와 경제를 다루었습니다. 모두들 광주에서의 시간을 정말 좋아했습니다. 광주 유명 음식점의 맛있는 음식도 좋고, 광주를 조금 벗어나서 담양 메타세쿼이아길을 다녀왔던 것도 기억에 남는다고 했습니다. 또, 대회 경기장에서 만난 버스 기사 및 자원봉사자 등 한국 사람들과도 금방 친구가 되어서 지역의 역사, 시사, 그리고 고유한 특색에 대해서 함께 얘기를 나눴다고 합니다. 스탠퍼드 수구팀 트위터를 보시면 이들이 광주에서 얼마나 즐거웠는지, 또 가수 싸이의 라이브 공연을 얼마나 좋아했는지 알 수 있습니다.(@stanfordh2opolo).

이 선수들은 대회가 끝난 후 서울에 와서 저와 로빈, 세준 그리고 그릭스비와 함께 만났습니다. 우리는 선수들을 저희 관저에 초대해서 편안한 분위기에서 즐거운 대화를 나누며 함께 햄버거와 핫도그를 즐겼습니다. 선수들이 한국에 온 후 아직 못먹은 음식이었거든요. 그릭스비도 선수들과 함께 즐거운 시간을 가졌는데, 아무도 안 보는 틈을 타서 핫도그와 빵을 슬쩍하기도 했답니다!
 

이후에는 이들을 데리고 나와서 관저와 대사관 주변 동네를 구경시켜 주었습니다. 우리는 정동과 덕수궁, 영국 대사관, 한국 최초의 감리교회인 정동제일교회, 이순신 장군과 세종대왕 동상, 동아일보와 조선일보 본사, 세종문화회관을 돌아봤고 저는 이곳의 역사에 대해서도 간단히 설명을 해주었습니다. 저는 정말 우리 동네를 사랑합니다! 풍부한 역사를 지닌 역동적인 곳이거든요.
 

이들과 함께 동네를 구경하면서 저도 참 재미있었습니다. 대회 참가를 위해 한국에 온 미국 대표단 모두가 정말 자랑스럽고, 또 앞으로 한국을 찾게 될 많은 미국 대학팀들을 생각하니 더욱 기대가 되었습니다. 따뜻하게 환대해주신 한국 국민들께 특히 감사드립니다! 

Like the outstanding student-athletes they are, they came to Korea prepared – completing extensive research into a number of different aspects of Korea.  Before arriving, each team member did independent research and made a presentation about Korea; some were about the history and culture while others were about current events and economic issues.  They told me they really enjoyed being in Gwangju - they loved eating the excellent food from Gwangju’s renowned restaurants and getting off the beaten path to explore Damyang MetaSequoia Park.  They also told me they made fast friends with a number of Koreans working at the games such as their bus driver and some local volunteers, who shared insights with them about the region’s history, current events, and things that make it unique.  You can see more from their time in Gwangju, including how excited they were to see Psy perform live, at the Stanford Water Polo Twitter account (@stanfordh2opolo).

After the games, they came to Seoul to visit with Robyn, Sejun, Grigsby, and me.  We invited them to the residence and served up hamburgers and hot dogs which they hadn’t yet had in Korea, while relaxing and chatting.  Grigsby had a great time meeting the team and even managed to steal several hot dogs and buns when nobody was looking!

꾸준한 독자들은 아시겠지만, 미국대사가 누리는 큰 즐거움 중 하나는 한국 전역에서 멋진 경험들을 해 볼 기회가 갖는 것입니다. 최근에 부산·광주·제주도로 갔던 여행들도 놀라웠습니다. 하지만 제가 사는 서울 근교에 있는 좋은 곳들도 놓치고 싶지 않습니다. 그래서 지난주에는 스포츠, 역사, 협력적 탐사·개발을 경험하며 인천에서 하루를 보냈습니다.

먼저 인천국제국항을 방문해서 관저탑과 두번째 여객터미날 건설 현장을 둘러보았습니다. 관제사들과 시간을 보내면서 그분들의 전문성에 감탄했습니다.

박완수 인천국제공항공사 사장님을 만나서 인천을 지역의 허브로 만들고 항공노선의 증가를 위해 미국과 한국이 어떻게 협력할 수 있는지 논의했습니다.


지난 10년동안 인천국제공항이 국제공항협의회 평가에서 세계1위를 차지한 이유는 간단합니다. 여행객들이 최고의 경험을 누릴 수 있도록 친절하고 전문성 있는 직원들이 노력하기 때문입니다. 인천을 방문하는 많은 사람들과 마찬가지로 전통적 한국문화를 경험하기 위해 저 역시 전통문화체험관을 들렸습니다. 안내직원과 함께 손거울을 만들었습니다.

공항을 둘러본 후 잭니클라우스골프클럽을 방문했습니다. 정말 멋진 곳이었습니다. 10월에 열리는 PGA 프레지던츠컵 대회를 준비하기 위한 개조공사가 진행중이었습니다. 고층빌딩을 배경으로 펼쳐잔 멋진 코스는 정말 근사한 광경이었습니다. 손만 안 다쳤더라도 라운드를 한 번 나가고 싶었을 정도입니다. 그곳에서 매트 카미엔스키 PGA투어 부사장, 류진 프레지던츠컵 조직위원회 위원장, 김재찬 게일 인터너셔널 외국인투자 담당 전무를 만났습니다. 게일 인터네셔널은 잭 니클라우스와 협의해서 이 골프장을 지었습니다.
다음으로 인천자유공원에 가서 한미관계 증진에 자긍심을 갖고 계신 시민단체 관계자들과 만남을 가졌습니다. 그분들의 노고에 깊은 감사함을 느꼈습니다. 1882년에 양국이 맺은 우호통상조약을 기념하는 100주년 기념탑에서부터 인천상륙작전을 기념하는 맥아더장군 동상에 이르기까지 자유공원의 많은 부분이 오랜동안의 긴밀한 한미관계를 보여주고 있었습니다.

한미협력의 역사를 반추해 본 이후, 마지막으로 윤병세 외교부 장관님과 함께 새로운 협력의 분야를 축하하는 자리에 갔습니다. 한국 쇄빙선 아라온호를 시찰하며 한국의 북극이사회 가입 2주년을 기념했습니다. 북극이사회는 북극권 국가들간의 협력, 조율, 대화를 증진하기 위한 고위급 정부간 협의기구입니다. 미국은 올해 북극이사회 의장국이며, 양국의 참여를 통해 우리는 협력할 수 있는 새로운 방법을 찾아냈습니다.

최근에 케리장관께서 의장국으로서의 세 가지 우선순위에 대해 연설했습니다. 바로 북극의 안전, 안보, 책임입니다. 온실가스가 북극에 미치는 영향을 줄이고, 북극 공동체의 지속가능한 경제발전을 위한 조치를 취하는 것을 의미합니다. (케리장관의 연설문 링크: http://www.state.gov/secretary/remarks/2015/04/241102.htm)  

조선분야에서 한국의 우수한 기술과 역사로 인해 한국은 북극의 환경·생태연구를 수행하는데 있어 한국은 강력한 파트너가 됩니다. 북극 연구에 있어 한국과 미국은 실제로 이웃입니다. 230마일밖에 안 되는 거리를 두고 양국의 연구기지가 위치해 있기 때문입니다!

전반적으로 매우 바쁘지만 건설적인 하루였습니다. 다음 방문 때는 인천의 유명한 차이나타운에서 짜장면 한 그릇을 먹어보고 싶습니다!

As regular readers will know, one of the great pleasures of being the U.S. Ambassador is that that I have the opportunity to experience wonderful things all over Korea.  My recent trips to Busan, Gwangju, and Jeju Island were amazing.  But I don’t want to miss the great places close to my home in Seoul.  This past week, I visited Incheon for a day packed with sports, history, and cooperative exploration and development.

The day began with a tour of Incheon International Airport (ICN), where I got to see the control tower and the work underway to build the second passenger terminal.  After spending time with some of the Air Traffic Controllers, I’m in awe of their expertise. 

I met with Mr. Park Wan-su, President of the Incheon International Airport Corporation, and we discussed how the U.S. and Korea can better partner to make Incheon a regional hub and add new routes. 

It’s easy to see why ICN has topped the Airports International Council list of best airports in the world for the past 10 years.  Incheon’s polite and professional staff ensures that travelers have a great experience.  Like many visitors to Incheon, I stopped by the Traditional Korean Cultural Experience Zone to check out the traditional Korean culture on display.  I had the chance to make a hand mirror with some of the guides. 

After touring the airport, I visited the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea, which is fantastic.  The course is in the middle of upgrades in preparation for the PGA President’s Cup in October.  The visuals are stunning—a gorgeous course set against a backdrop of skyscrapers.  If my hand was not hurt, I wouldn’t have been able to resist playing a round.  While there, I got to meet with Matt Kamienski, PGA Executive Director, Roy Ryu, Chairman of the President’s Cup Organizing Committee, and Jaechan Kim, Senior Vice President for Foreign Investment at Gale International, who built the course in consultation with Jack Nicklaus himself. 

Then it was on to Freedom Park, where I was honored to meet with civic groups who take pride in fostering relations between South Korea and the United States.  I felt a deep sense of gratitude for their work.  So much of Freedom Park is a testament to the longstanding, close relationship between the United States and South Korea, from the Centennial Monument commemorating the Treaty of Amity between our two countries in 1882, to the statue of General MacArthur marking the site of the Incheon Landing. 

Finally, after contemplating the history of U.S.-ROK cooperation, I got to celebrate a newer avenue of cooperation with Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se aboard the ROK Araon icebreaker ship, celebrating two years of South Korea’s participation in the Arctic Council.  The Arctic Council is a high-level intergovernmental forum that provides a means for promoting cooperation, coordination, and interaction among the Arctic States.  The United States is chair of the Arctic Council this year and, through both countries’ participation, we’ve found new ways to work together. 

Secretary Kerry recently gave a speech outlining our three priorities as chair:  Arctic Ocean safety, security, and stewardship.  This means taking steps to reduce the impact of greenhouse gases on the Arctic, as well as sustainable economic development for Arctic communities. Korea’s advanced technology and history of ship building makes it a strong partner for environmental and ecological research in the Arctic.  In fact, in our arctic research, we’re practically neighbors.  Our research stations are a mere 230 miles apart! 

All in all, it was a very busy but fruitful day in Incheon.  Next time I visit, I hope to try a bowl of jajangmyeon at Incheon’s famous Chinatown!

2주 전, 저는 멋진 도시 광주를 처음으로 방문했습니다. 광주는 한국 뿐만 아니라 전세계적으로도 민주주의와 인권을 향한 열정으로 잘 알려져있는 도시입니다. 광주에서의 첫 일정은 5.18 민주묘지를 방문해 이러한 숭고한 가치를 지키다 목숨을 잃은 분들을 기리는 참배로 시작했습니다. 묘지를 돌아보면서, 1980년 당시 민주주의를 위해 싸우다 목숨을 잃은 분들의 사연을 듣고 가슴이 뭉클했습니다. 이런 용감한 분들과 다른 많은 이들의 노력 덕분에 한국이 오늘날 세계 선진 민주국가 중 하나로 발돋움할 수 있었다고 생각합니다. 광주야말로 이런 발전의 중심에 있었습니다. 세준이도 함께 동행했는데요, 세준이가 5.18 묘지를 방문한 것 자체는 기억을 못하겠지만, 언젠가 세준이에게 이 곳의 중요성을 설명해주려합니다.      

다음으로는 광주 수피아여고를 찾았습니다. 이 학교는 가장 초기의 한미 양국의 교육 분야 협력을 잘 보여주는 예입니다. 1908년 미국 선교사 유진 벨 목사가 설립한 학교로, 오늘날까지 학교가 번성하고 있는 모습 뿐만 아니라, 학생들에게서도 깊은 인상을 받았습니다. 뛰어난 영어실력으로 여러 좋은 질문을 했답니다. 많은 학생들이 기업, 정치, 문화 등 다양한 분야에서  미래의 지도자들로 성장할 거라는 예감이 듭니다. 또 수피아여고는 한국 최초의 여자 농구팀이 창설된 곳이기도 하답니다. 

광주에 있는 아메리칸 코너에서는 광주 지역 젊은이들을 만나, 코너에서의 대사관 프로그램에 대한 의견을 물었습니다. 좋은 대화의 시간이었고, 대사관 프로그램 동문인 이들 젊은이들의 모습이 인상적이었습니다. 광주 아메리칸 코너는 서울 이외 지역민들에게 다가가기 위해 정기적으로 다양한 프로그램을 진행하고 있는 한국 내 3개의 아메리칸 코너 가운데 하나입니다. 혹시 광주, 부산, 또는 대구에 계신 분들은 아메리칸 코너 페이스북 페이지에서 “좋아요” 를 눌러주시고 앞으로 진행할 프로그램에 동참해주세요!    


광주시는 세계 최고의 대학 선수들을 맞이할 준비를 아주 훌륭하게 했더군요. 스포츠 열혈팬인 저로서는 광주 유니버시아드 개막식에 참석하게 되어 영광이었습니다. 43,000명이 넘는 참가자들과 함께 한 자리였으니, 그 열기가 얼마나 뜨거웠는지 짐작하시겠죠? 박근혜 대통령도 참석하셨고, 세심하게 준비한 개막식 안무도 좋았습니다.    


유니버시아드는 보통 행사가 아니랍니다. 약 150개 국가, 12,000명이 넘는 선수들과 관계자가 참여하고 있습니다. 미국 선수단을 응원할 수 있어 저도 무척 흥분되었는데요, 켄자스 대학 남자 농구팀과 스탠포드 대 여자 수구 팀을 비롯한 대규모 선수단이 미국 대표로 대회에 참가했습니다. 잘 아시겠지만Jayhawks라고도 알려진 캔자스 대학 농구팀은 NCAA에서 가장 유서 깊은 명문팀 중 하나입니다. 또 캔자스 대학은  농구의 역사에서 남다른 위상을 차지하고 있는데요, 바로 농구라는 운동경기를 창안한 제임스 네이스미스가 캔자스 대학 초대 농구 감독이였답니다. 농구팀 감독 빌 셀프도 만났습니다. 또한 캔자스 대학은 저의 가족과도 각별한 인연이 있는 곳입니다. 작고하신 저의 할아버지께서 캔자스 대학 동문이시고, 저의 어머니께서는 캔자스 주 노튼에서 태어나셨습니다. 


모든 선수들이 하나같이 한국에서 정말 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있다는 이야기를 하더군요. 캔자스 대학 팀은 지역 학생들과 함께 농구 클리닉을 열었구요, 스탠포드 대학 여자 수구팀은 한국에 오기 전 한국의 문화, 역사에 대한 조사와 프리젠테이션을 해야했다고 합니다. 이들은 진정 한미 양국 간 가교를 놓는 일을 하고 있었습니다.

광주는 언제나 풍요로운 문화와 역사가 가득한 도시였습니다. 광주 시민들로부터 다문화 가정에 대한 통합과 수용 등 광주 지역 전체에 도움이 될 여러 현안에 대해 주도적 역할을 하고 있다는 이야기를 듣고 자랑스럽다는 생각이 들었습니다. 광주는 과거, 현재, 미래의 한국의 문화를 만들어나가는 데 중요한 역할을 지속적으로 해나갈 것이며 다시 광주를 방문할 수 있기를 기대합니다.      

A couple weeks ago, I visited the lovely city of Gwangju for the first time.  Gwangju is a city famous in Korea and throughout the world for its passion for democracy and human rights.  I began my trip to Gwangju with a visit to the May 18th Memorial Cemetery to pay my respects to those who died in defense of these noble ideals. While visiting the Cemetery, I was moved to hear the personal stories of some of the men and women who died fighting for democracy in 1980.  Through the efforts of these brave souls and many others, the Republic of Korea has transformed itself into one of the world’s leading democracies.  Gwangju was at the center of that.  Sejun was with us for the visit and, while he won’t remember the visit itself, we plan on telling him one day about its significance.

Another stop on my trip was to Gwangju Speer Girls’ High School.  You could say this school is one of the earliest examples of U.S.-Korea educational cooperation.  It was founded in 1908 by American missionary Reverend Eugene Bell.  It is great to see the school thriving today, and I was quite impressed by the students.  They asked me great questions using their strong English skills.  I predict that many of these students will go on to be future leaders in business, politics, and culture.  I also discovered that the school was the site of the first-ever women’s basketball team in Korea.

At our American Corner in Gwangju, I met with a group of local youth and asked them for their feedback on our programs there.  We had a very good exchange, and it was impressive to see what our program alumni are doing.  The Gwangju American Corner is one of three American Corners in Korea where we conduct regular programming to reach out to audiences outside the capital.  If you live in Gwangju, Busan, or Daegu, please “like” the Facebook page of the American Corner and attend one of our next programs!

The city of Gwangju has done a fantastic job of preparing to welcome the world’s best collegiate athletes to Korea.  Being a big fan of sports, I was also honored to attend the Universiade, or “University Games,” Opening Ceremonies.  With over 43,000 attendees, you can imagine how exciting the atmosphere was!  President Park was in attendance, and we all very much enjoyed the carefully prepared choreography of the event.

The Games are a huge deal!  Over 12,000 athletes and officials from approximately 150 countries are participating.  I was thrilled to be able to show my support for Team USA!   A large delegation represented America including the University of Kansas Men’s basketball team and the Stanford women’s water polo team.  As you may know, the University of Kansas basketball team, the Jayhawks, is one of the most storied teams in the NCAA.  The University of Kansas has a special place in the history of basketball as the inventor of the sport of basketball, James Naismith, was actually the school’s first head coach.  I had the opportunity to meet their amazing coach, Bill Self.  Also KU means a lot to my family as my late grandfather is a KU alum and my mother was born in Norton, Kansas.

One thing all the athletes mentioned was what a fantastic time they were having in Korea.  The University of Kansas team held some basketball clinics with local Korean youth.  The Stanford women’s water polo team were required to do some research and make a presentation on Korean culture and history before their trip.  They are truly building connections between our two countries.

I very much enjoyed catching up on the latest news about the Stanford campus when I had lunch with the Stanford women’s water polo team at the Athlete’s Village. Gwangju has always been a city rich in culture and history.  I was proud to hear from people in Gwangju that they are taking the lead on issues including integration and acceptance of multicultural families, which will benefit all members of the Gwangju community.  Gwangju continues to play an important role in shaping culture in Korea for the past, present, and future.  I look forward to visiting again soon.
