2011년, 평창은 2018년 2월에 열릴 2018 동계올림픽 및 패럴림픽의 개최 도시로 선정되었습니다. 전 세계 선수를 맞기 위한 평창의 준비작업은 이미 시작되었습니다. 음력 설날 직전, 저는 로빈, 세준이와 함께 2018 평창 동계올림픽의 28개 공식 테스트 이벤트 중 첫번째 경기인 아우디 FIS 스키 월드컵을 관람하기 위해 평창과 정선을 방문했습니다. 평창으로 가는 도중에 강릉을 방문하여 이 지역의 역사 및 문화적 장소도 둘러보았습니다.  
  
강릉에서는 조선시대의 위대한 여성화가인 신사임당이 당대의 학자, 정치가였던 자신의 아들 율곡 이이와 함께 살았던 아름다운 오죽헌을 방문했습니다. 신사임당과 율곡 이이의 초상화는 각각 한국의 5만원권과 5천원권 지폐에 실려있습니다.

 우리는 한국의 전통적인 농민들의 춤인 농악 공연도 관람했습니다. 농악은 유네스코 인류무형문화재에 등재되어 있습니다. 연휴가 시작되는 주말에 특별한 공연을 해 주신 농악단에 진심으로 감사드립니다!

 그 다음으로는 강릉 중앙시장을 방문하여 한국인들이 음력 설날 연휴 준비를 위해 무엇을 사는지 직접 볼 수 있었습니다. 아시겠지만 저는 치맥을 아주 좋아하기 때문에, 치킨을 튀겨 달콤하고 매운 소스를 바른 닭강정의 풍부한 맛을 시식해 볼 수 있어 매우 좋았습니다. 또 김치소가 들어있는 메밀전병과 마른 오징어도 맛보았습니다. 세준이와 그릭스비를 위해 뽀로로 베개도 샀습니다. 그릭스비는 이번 여행에 함께하지 못했는데, 세준이 베개만 사가지고 갔다면 아마 질투했을 겁니다! 저는 시장을 둘러보며 상인분들과 손님 등 다양한 사람들을 만나보는 것이 매우 즐거웠고, 몇몇 가게 주인분들과 찍은 셀카 사진은 지역 신문에 실리기도 했습니다.

 중앙시장 방문 후, 올림픽 사전 준비 경기인 2016 아우디 FIS 스키 월드컵의 환영 리셉션에 참석하기 위해 평창으로 향했습니다. 여러 국제스포츠기구 대표들, 스키대회 참여 선수들의 출신국 대사들, 조양호 2018 평창 동계올림픽 조직위원회 위원장, 김종덕 문화체육관광부 장관 등 많은 분들이 참석하셨습니다. 국제올림픽위원회(IOC) 위원들을 비롯한 모든 분들이 전세계 선수들을 맞이하기 위한 평창의 준비과정에 대해 많은 관심과 기대를 가지고 있었습니다.

 이튿날, 우리는 2016 아우디 FIS 스키 월드컵을 관전하기 위해 정선 알파인 센터로 향했습니다. 남자 활강 경기를 관람했는데, 미국의 스티븐 나이먼 선수가 3위로 입상하는 모습을 보게 되어 기뻤습니다. 경기장을 둘러싼 산이 매우 아름다웠고, 이것을 본 로빈은 자신의 고향인 버몬트 주를 떠올렸습니다. 우리는 세준이가 직접 겨울 스포츠를 즐길 수 있도록 썰매도 준비해 갔지만, 안타깝게도 세준이가 몸이 안좋아서 어른들과 함께 경기를 구경하는 것에 만족해야 했습니다. 전체적으로 보았을 때, 올림픽 준비를 위한 훌륭한 스타트였습니다. 코스 상태도 좋았고, 선수들도 즐거운 시간을 보냈으며, 관중들도 매우 활발한 분위기에서 경기를 관람했습니다.

 날씨는 조금 추웠지만, 저는 이번 방문 기간 동안 강원도 도민들의 따뜻한 마음을 느낄 수 있었습니다. 만나뵙게 되어서 기뻤으며 환대에 감사드립니다. 2018 평창 동계올림픽의 성공적 준비를 기원합니다!
In 2011, PyeongChang was named the host city for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, to be held in February 2018.  Already, preparations are underway to ensure that PyeongChang is ready to welcome athletes from around the world.  Right before the Lunar New Year, Robyn, Sejun, and I visited PyeongChang and Jeongseon to attend the Audi FIS Ski World Cup, the first of 28 official test events for the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Winter Games.  On our way to PyeongChang, we also visited Gangneung to take in some cultural and historical attractions in the region.

 While in Gangneung, we visited the beautiful Ojukeon House, where Sinsaimdang, the great female artist of the Joseon Dynasty, lived and where her son Yulgok Yi, scholar and politician of the Joseon Dynasty, was born.  Sinsaimdang and Yulgok are featured on South Korea’s 50,000 and 5,000 won notes, respectively.

 We also saw a performance of Nongak, a traditional Korean farmers’ dance.  Nongak is listed as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO.  We were so thankful to receive this special holiday weekend gift from the performers!

 The next stop was to the Gangneung Joongang Market, where we saw firsthand what Koreans buy for the Lunar New Year holiday.  As you may know, I’m a big fan of chimaek, so I loved sampling the rich taste of Dakgangjeong, or deep fried chicken glazed in a sweet and spicy sauce. We also tried Memil jeonbyoung (buckwheat pancake with kimchi filling) and dried squid.  I also bought some nice “Pororo” pillows for Sejun and Grigsby – Grigsby couldn’t come with us and would have been jealous if only Sejun had gotten a pillow!  I enjoyed walking around meeting many different people in the market – both shoppers and local vendors – and I took quite a few selfies with the merchants, which were highlighted in one of the local newspapers.

 After the market visit, we continued to PyeongChang to attend the welcoming reception of the 2016 Audi FIS Ski World Cup, a warm-up event for the Olympics.  I was impressed with the large turnout of representatives of many international sporting bodies, of ambassadors from countries that had teams participating in the skiing events, and of the President of the 2018 PyeongChang Organizing Committee Cho Yang-ho as well as of Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Kim Jong-deok.  Everybody, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC) members, is very excited about PyeongChang’s preparations to host the winter athletes from all around the world.

 The following day, we headed to the Jeongseon Alpine Centre to watch the 2016 Audi FIS Ski World Cup events.  We enjoyed the men’s downhill races, and I was happy to see Team USA’s skier Steven Nyman finish third.  The mountains in the area are very beautiful, and they reminded Robyn of her home state of Vermont.  We brought Sejun’s sled along so he could get in on some of the winter sports action, but unfortunately he wasn’t feeling very well so he had to be satisfied just watching the games like the rest of us.  All in all, it was a great first start for the Olympics preparations – the course was in great shape, the athletes had a great time, and the audience was really lively and engaged in the event.

 Despite the chilly temperatures, I felt the warmth of the people in Gangwon during my stay there.  It was such a pleasure to meet everyone and enjoy the local hospitality.  I wish everyone continued success with preparations for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics!
최근 버나드 샴포 중장이 이임하고 토머스 밴달 중장이 취임하는 미8군 사령관 이ㆍ취임식에 참석했습니다. 사령관 이ㆍ취임식과 같은 행사는 양국간의 깊은 군사관계를 상기시켜줍니다. 이 자리에서 저는 한국군 역사의 살아있는 상징이라할 수 있는 백선엽 장군님을 만났습니다.

 저는 얼마 전 95세를 맞이하신 백선엽 장군님으로부터 한국전쟁 당시의 경험과 맥아더 장군의 도착과 미국의 지원이 어떻게 전세를 역전시켰는지에 대한 이야기를 들은 적이 있습니다. 백 장군님은 미8군 명예사령관이시기 때문에 여전히 “현역”으로 간주되고 있고, 한국전쟁 당시의 미8군 소속부대 표지를 부착할 수 있습니다. 소속부대 표지는 그 부대에 배속된 모든 군인들이 왼쪽 어깨에 부착하는 것으로서, 만약 전쟁 기간 중에 그 부대에 배속이 되었다면, 복무의 상징으로서 영구히 오른쪽 어깨에 부착할 수 있습니다.

 스캐퍼로티 사령관께서 공식적인 고별사를 했습니다. 모두가 샴포 중장님을 그리워할겁니다. 샴포 중장 부부와 저희 부부는 좋은 친구로서, 조만간 미국에서 만나게 되기를 기대하고 있습니다. 한국에서 여러 번 근무한 샴포 중장님은 한국 문화를 적극적으로 수용했습니다. 한국인 친구들과 환갑잔치도 했으니까요. 다채로웠던 이력과 더불어 인생의 다음 장으로 넘어가는 샴포 중장님께 모든 행운을 빕니다.

 그리고 신임 사령관 밴덜 사령관을 환영합니다! 밴덜 중장님은 미국 육군사관학교 웨스트포인트를 졸업했고 주한미군 연합ㆍ합동작전 담당관, 그리고 제2사단장을 역임한 한국 경험이 풍부한 분입니다. 중장님의 아들 세 명이 모두 현역 군인입니다. 취임식에서 중장님의 형제ㆍ자매와 아들 두 명을 만났습니다. 한 명은 해병대 조종사이고, 다른 한 명은 육군 야전 포병사단에 근무중입니다. 나머지 한 명은 현재 중위로 해군 함정에 배치되어 취임식에 참석하지 못했습니다.

이 규모로 전진배치된 육군은 미8군밖에 없습니다. 한국전쟁 당시 상륙 작전은 북한군과 중국군을 격퇴하는데 핵심적인 역할을 했습니다. 전쟁 이후로도 한미동맹과 공통의 역사라는 중요한 이정표를 제공하면서 미8군은 한국에 남게 되었습니다. 그 어느 때보다 양국의 안보관계는 동북아 지역의 평화와 안정에 중요합니다. 이러한 맥락에서 상시 전투 태세를 갖추고 있는 미국군, 한국군 모두에게 감사드리고 싶습니다.

조만간 부산에 내려가 주한 미 해군사령부 개관식에 참석할 예정입니다. 주한 미국 해군사령관 빌 번 준장님과 한국 해군작전사령관 이기식 중장님을 만나게 될 것입니다. 이 두 분과 양국 군에서 복무하고 있는 군인들의 헌신은 한반도에서 자유와 민주주의가 지속되도록 지원하는데 매우 중요합니다. 주한 미 해군사령부는 우리가 같은 길을 함께 나아가는 가운데 양국 공통의 가치관을 잘 보여주는 사례라고 할 수 있습니다.
I was honored to attend the Eighth Army Change of Command ceremony recently at which Lieutenant General Thomas Vandal assumed command from Lieutenant General Bernard Champoux.  Events such as a change of command remind us of our deep military ties with the Republic of Korea, and there I was deeply humbled to meet a living icon of South Korean military history, General Paik Sun-Yup.

 I have heard General Paik, who just turned 95, speak impressively about his service during the Korean War and how General Douglas McArthur’s arrival and U.S. support helped turn the tide of battle for the ROK.  General Paik, as "Honorary Eighth Army Commander," is still considered to be on active duty. This distinction allows him to wear the Eighth Army combat patch from the Korean War.  A combat patch is something that all soldiers assigned to a unit wear on their left shoulder.  If a soldier is assigned to a unit while that unit is on combat status, then he is authorized to wear that patch permanently on his right shoulder as a symbol of his service to the ROK.

 At the change of command ceremony, General Scaparrotti formally bid farewell to LTG Champoux, who will be missed.  He and his wife Mary Sue are good friends of ours, and Robyn and I look forward to seeing them soon in the United States.  LTG Champoux has done multiple tours in the ROK and has enthusiastically embraced Korean culture.  He even celebrated his 60th birthday, or hwangap, with many of his Korean friends.  I wish LTG Champoux the best as he moves on to the next chapter of his storied career!

 We welcome LTG Vandal as the new commander!  LTG Vandal is a West Point grad who has already amassed a wealth of ROK experience, both as the USFK director of combined and joint operations and as the commander of the 2nd Infantry Division.  It was great to see his family at the ceremony, including his brother and sister, and two of his three sons, all of whom are active duty military.  One is a pilot in the Marines, one is in the field artillery division in the Army, and the third is a lieutenant junior grade who was not able to attend the ceremony since he is currently deployed on a Navy ship.

The Eighth Army is the only forward-deployed army of its size.  Their amphibious landings during the Korean War were instrumental in repelling North Korean and Chinese forces.  The Eighth Army has remained in Korea since this time to ensure lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, marking an important part of the U.S.-ROK Alliance and of our shared history.  The security aspect of the relationship is vital to the peace and stability of the Northeast Asian region, now more than ever.  On that note, I want to thank those who serve, both American and Korean soldiers, and who remain ready to “fight tonight.” 

For this reason, I am preparing to go to Busan soon to attend the opening of the new U.S. Naval Forces Korea headquarters.  I look forward to seeing Commander of Naval Forces Korea, Rear Admiral Bill Byrne, and Commander of the ROK Fleet, Vice Admiral Lee Ki-sik.  Their dedication, and the dedication of men and women in the service of our two countries, is vital to the continued support of freedom and democracy on the Peninsula.  The new U.S. Naval Forces Korea headquarters are an exciting example of our shared values as we join paths and go forward together.  Kachi kapshida!
서울에는 15년만의 한파가 찾아왔지만 미국 노스웨스트와인협회가 주최한 와인 테이스팅 행사의 분위기는 따뜻하고 즐거웠습니다. 1월 25일 서울에서 열린 이번 행사에 오레곤 주와 워싱턴 주에 위치한 와인너리 대표들이 참여했습니다. 저는 1,500여 곳의 와이너리에서 생산된 와인 중에 일부를 맛 볼 수 있었습니다.

 그곳에서 하윤석 마스터 소믈리에를 만났습니다. 현재 샌프란시스코에 위치한 미슐랭 쓰리 스타 레스토랑 베누(Benu)의 와인 디렉터로 활동하고 계신 분입니다. (이 식당 역시 한국계 요리사가 운영하고 있습니다.) 정말 멋진 직업 중 하나가 아닐까요. 처음에는 요식업계에서 커리어를 시작했지만 결국에는 와인에 관심을 갖게 되었다고 합니다. 전시된 여러 와인을 시음하면서 이 분의 이야기를 들으니 많은 것을 배울 수 있었습니다. 각 와인을 평가하며 다채롭고 상세하게 맛과 색깔을 설명해주셨습니다. 하 소믈리에님은 와인 향기만 맡고도 토양의 종류, 강우량, 포도 품종 (유기농인지 여부) 등 모든 것을 다 아시는 것 같았습니다. 뛰어난 미각으로 와인에 대한 지식을 풍부하게 전해주셨습니다. 제 아내 로빈은 스파클링 와인을 좋아하기 때문에 저도 제가 배운 것을 적용해서 다음 번에는 좋은 와인을 골라보려고 합니다!

 하윤석 소믈리에는 유일한 한국계 마스터 소믈리에입니다. 전 세계에는 마스터 소믈리에가 되기 위한 시험을 통과한 사람이 250명밖에 없는데 그 중 한 명입니다. 게다가 많은 상을 받았지만 그 중에서도 Food and Wine 이라는 잡지가 주는 “올해의 소믈리에”도 수상했습니다.

 와인은 미국의 음식과 문화에 핵심적인 부분으로 자리잡았습니다. 미국에는 약 3,000 곳의 상업 와이너리가 있는데 알래스카를 포함한 50개주 모두에 분포해 있습니다. 지역에서의 소비를 위한 생산도 하지만, 많은 와이너리와 포도농장이 스스로를 관광지로 마케팅을 하고 있습니다.

여러분들이 미국에서 방문할 수 있는 수많은 와이너리 중 하나입니다. 

 오레건, 워싱턴 주에 위치한 와이너리와 더불어 미국육류수출협회, 미국감자협회, 미국크랜베리마케팅협회도 이번 테이스팅 행사에 참가했습니다. 미국 북서부 지역의 와인과 잘 어울리는 맛있는 음식이 제공되었구요. 오레곤 주의 피노누아와 피노그리, 워싱턴 주의 리슬링, 까베르네 소비뇽, 메를로, 샤르도네 등 여러분들께서 이 와인들을 맛보시면 깊은 맛과 합리적인 가격에 놀랄 것입니다. 통계 수치로 보더라도, 2013년부터 미국 노스웨스트와인협회의 한국시장 수출은 두 배 증가했습니다.

 가족이 경영하는 농장에서부터, 중소기업 규모, 세계적 대기업 규모에 이르기까지 다양한 와이너리가 참여했습니다. 와인 생산자들의 성격도 다양했지만, 공통점이 있다면 서울을 더 많이 알고 싶어했다는 것입니다. 추운 날씨에도 불구하고 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있다고 했습니다. 훌륭한 문화 교류이고 곧 다시 돌아오겠다고도 얘기했습니다. 저는 캘리포니아에 산 적이 있기 때문에 나파밸리, 소노마밸리를 포함한 캘리포니아산 와인에 익숙합니다. 하지만 오레곤, 워싱턴산 와인도 정말 훌륭했고 여러분들께서 덜 알려진 지역의 와인을 시음해 보길 원하신다면 꼭 이들을 추천하고 싶습니다!

It may have been the coldest day on record for the past 15 years in Seoul, but the atmosphere at the Northwest Wine Coalition’s recent Grand Tasting was warm and festive!  Representatives from Oregon and Washington State wineries came to Seoul for this special event on January 25, and I was lucky enough to attend and enjoy wines from some of the 1,500 regional wineries.

 At the event, I was thrilled to meet Korean-born Master Sommelier Yoon Ha.  He has one of the best jobs in the world as the Wine Director of the Michelin 3-star restaurant Benu (which is also run by a Korean-American chef!) in San Francisco.  He started out in the food industry and gradually became interested in wine.  It was very enlightening listening to him as he sampled the various wines on offer.  He evaluated the wine and described in colorful detail the taste and flavor of each.  Sommelier Ha seemed to taste everything in the bouquet:  the type of soil, the amount of rain, and even whether the grapes were organic or non-organic!  He had a very discerning palate and was generous with his knowledge about wine appreciation. Robyn enjoys sparkling wine, so I’ll put what I learned to the test and try to choose a good one for her!

 Yoon is the only Korean-born Master Sommelier and one of only 250 people in the world to have passed the Master Sommelier exam. In addition, among his many distinctions, he has won Food and Wine magazine’s Sommelier of the Year award.

 Wine has become an integral part of U.S. cuisine and culture.  There are roughly 3,000 commercial vineyards in the United States, and wineries in all 50 states, even Alaska!  Along with producing wines for regional consumption, many vineyards and wineries are marketing themselves as travel destinations.

Here’s one of the many vineyards you can visit in the U.S. 

 In addition to the Oregon and Washington wineries, the U.S. Meat Export Federation, the U.S. Potato Board, and the U.S. Cranberry Marketing Committee were represented at the Grand Tasting, which meant we had some delicious food selected to pair well with the different wines from the Northwest region: Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris from Oregon; and Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay from Washington State.  I think if you try these wines, you will be pleasantly surprised at the depth of flavor and the value they offer.  This can be seen in the statistics: since 2013, the Northwest Wine Coalition has doubled its sales to the Korean market.

 The wineries represented ranged from family-owned through mid-size to one of the largest in the world.  There were a wide variety of personalities among the winemakers.  One commonality was that they all loved learning about Seoul – they told me that they had a great time here despite the cold.  It was an excellent cultural exchange and they all said they would be back again soon.  Having lived in California, I am familiar with wines from California, including the Napa and Sonoma valleys.  But these wines from Oregon and Washington State were really fantastic, and I highly recommend them the next time you are looking to try some of the lesser-known wine regions!
