미국 바둑협회에 따르면 바둑의 역사는 무려 2500년 혹은 그보다 훨씬 전인 4000년 전까지 거슬러 올라간다고 합니다. 바둑은 중국에서 유래하여 한국 및 전세계로 퍼져나갔습니다. 한국에서 프로바둑기사가 65년 전 처음 나오기 시작해, 최근 수십년 간 한국은 바둑의 세계를 점령해왔습니다. 2004년 영국 이코노미스트지는 바둑이 “순수한 정신적 기술로 승부하는 세계에서 가장 오래된 생존 게임”이라고 하면서, 바둑에서 인간을 이길 수 있는 컴퓨터 프로그램은 아직 만들어지지 않았다고 말했습니다. 그런데 10년 만에 얼마나 많은 것이 바뀌었는지요! 

얼마 전 구글 딥마인드에서 마련한 이세돌 9단과 구글의 인공지능 프로그램 알파고와의 챌린지 매치 기념 갈라 디너에서 저는 컴퓨터 프로그래밍과 바둑 두 분야의 천재들을 만날 수 있었습니다.  



이세돌 9단과 전 구글 CEO이자 지금 구글 지주회사 알파벳의 에릭 슈미트 회장을 만날 수 있어서 정말 기뻤습니다. 체스와 비교해서 바둑은 경우의 수가 엄청나게 많기 때문에 컴퓨터가 모든 경우의 수를 다 조합해 계산하기가 불가능하다고 합니다. 그리고 최고의 바둑기사는 보통 직관과 경험에 의거해 두는 경우가 많아서 컴퓨터 프로그램은 이를 절대 따라할 수 없는 것으로 여겨졌죠. 


이번 대국을 준비하기 위해 알파고는 스스로 바둑을 두면서 최고 바둑 기사들의 경기 방법을 “학습”했습니다. 그렇게 보면 이제 인공지능이 이렇게 학습할 수 있다는 것은 향후 복잡한 의료, 과학 문제를 푸는데 활용될 수 있다는 점에서 좋은 가능성을 보였다고 할 수 있죠. 인공지능이 앞으로 이 분야에서 전에 상상하지 못했던 커다란 돌파구를 마련해줄 수도 있습니다.  



이세돌 9단은 알파고의 승리에 대해 너무 낙담하지 말았으면 합니다! 이세돌 9단은 분명 최선을 다했고 한 경기를 이겼으며 벌써 재대결을 요청했습니다. 뉴욕타임스는 스탠퍼드 대학 인공지능 연구소의 컴퓨터 과학자인 페이페이 리 소장의 말을 다음과 같이 인용했습니다. “저는 전혀 놀랍지 않았습니다. 가장 빠른 인간보다도 자동차가 더 빨리 달린다는게 놀랄 일인가요?”    

현장에서 대국을 볼 수 있어서 정말 즐거웠습니다. 이세돌 9단과 구글 팀 모두에게 그동안의 노력에 경의를 표합니다! 

The American Go Association says that that the game of Go, called “baduk” in Korea, is thought to have originated as far back as 2500 to 4000 years ago.  It originated in China, and then spread to Korea and the rest of the world.  Koreans have been competing professionally for the past 65 years and in the past decades have truly dominated the game.  Back in 2004, calling it “the world’s oldest surviving game of pure mental skill,” the Economist said that a computer program had not been designed yet that could win at Go.  What a difference a decade makes! 

I had the pleasure of meeting some of the best and brightest of both the computer programming world and the world of baduk recently when I attended the Google DeepMind gala dinner and Challenge Match between Master Champion Lee Sedol and Google’s Artificial Intelligence program AlphaGo.



It was great to meet Lee and to see Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO and now Executive Chairman of Alphabet, a Google subsidiary.  Compared to chess, baduk has a huge number of options for play, which had made it impossible for the computer to calculate all of the potential variations of play.  Also, the best baduk players are often thought to play based on intuition and experience, something that has been hard to replicate in a computer program.



To prepare for the match, AlphaGo was tasked with playing games against itself and “studying” matches of master players.  The potential victory in this regard is for artificial intelligence to be able to work in this manner and be used for solving complex health and science problems. Artificial intelligence could perhaps develop previously unimagined breakthroughs in these areas. 



Mr. Lee should not feel bad that the machine won!  Mr. Lee clearly did his best, won a game, and has already asked for a re-match.  The New York Times recently quoted Stanford University computer scientist Fei-Fei Li, Director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, as saying, “I’m not surprised at all.  How come we are not surprised that a car runs faster than the fastest human?”  

It was great fun to come out and watch the match.  Congratulations to Mr. Lee and the Google team for all of their hard work and effort!  

얼마 전 올 여름 개봉 예정인 한국 전쟁을 다룬 영화 ‘인천상륙작전’ 촬영장을 방문할 기회가 있었답니다. 출연진과 스태프들을 만나고 역사 속으로 빨려들어간 듯한 느낌이 들었던, 무척 설레이는 경험이었습니다.  


작전명 크로마이트, 일명 인천상륙작전으로 널리 알려진 이 작전은 1950년 9월, 맥아더 장군이 이끄는 미군이 한국과 일본의 지원을 받아 4일 동안 북한이 점령한 지역으로 침투한 작전입니다. 상륙 작전의 성공은 무엇보다 자신의 계획과 방식을 소신 있게 밀어붙인 맥아더 장군의 뚝심이 있었기에 가능했습니다. 인천상륙작전은 단순히 한 지역을 탈환한 것 그 이상의 의미가 있는데, 한반도 전체를 차지하고자 했던 북한의 계획의 허점을 고스란히 노출시켰고, 전쟁 초반 북한의 거침없었던 진격에 타격을 가한 작전으로 평가되고 있습니다.
   

그러나 무엇보다 영화 ‘인천상륙작전’이 흥미로웠던 점은 영화가 주목한 대상이 리암 니슨이 연기한 맥아더 장군이 아니라, 미군의 상륙을 가능하게 했던 첩보 수집 작전인 작전명 X-Ray 에 참가한 용감한 한국 영웅들이라는 것입니다. 이 영화는 한국 국민들에게는 긍지와 자부심을 심어주고, 한국과 미국의 관객들에게는 아무리 열악한 여건 하의 어려운 임무라도 양국이 얼마나 긴밀히 협력을 하고 있는지 일깨워주는 작품이 될 것이라 생각합니다.  



촬영장에서 이재한 감독과 이규창 공동 제작자가 8분짜리 영화 예고편을 살짝 보여주기도 했습니다. 제가 본 것은 아직은 효과를 넣기 전인 미완성본이었지만, 영화의 높은 완성도를 짐작할 수 있었고, 최종 작품이 정말 재미있을 것이라는 기대를 갖게 했습니다. 그리고 구소련 시대를 그대로 옮겨놓은 듯한 소품으로 꾸며놓은 김일성 집무실 세트장도 둘러보았습니다.


한국계 미국인 감독이자, 뉴욕대 영화학교 출신인 이재한 감독은 영화 ‘컷 런스 딥’, ‘내 머리 속의 지우개’ 등의 작품으로 알려져 있는데요, 제가 예전에 살던 곳에서 가까운 메릴랜드 교외에서 자랐더군요. 공동 제작자인 이규창 대표는 워싱턴 대학교(University of Washington)에서 풋볼을 했다고 합니다. (워싱턴 대학 허스키는 제 모교 스탠포드 카디널의 라이벌이지만 그래도 이규창 대표를 미워하지 않습니다. - 농담입니다. ^^ ) 그리고 그는 이번 영화에 리암 니슨을 캐스팅하는 데 큰 역할을 했다고 합니다. 정태원 대표는 정말 굉장한 영화를 제작하고 있고요. 이정재, 박철민, 신수향씨를 비롯한 배우들도 무척 인상 깊었고, 수준 높은 연기로 영화의 완성도를 높여주고 있다고 생각합니다.      

다시 한번 영화 ‘인천상륙작전’ 세트장을 찾은 저를 따뜻하고 열렬하게 환영해주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다. 이 영화는 한국과 미국인들이 멋진 문화 프로젝트에 참여해 함께 작업하는 좋은 예라고 생각합니다. 올해 하반기에 개봉한다고 하는데요, 완성된 작품을 빨리 가서 보고 싶네요!

Recently I had the great pleasure of visiting the filming location for the upcoming Korean War movie Operation Chromite, which is going to be released later this summer.  It was exciting to meet the cast and crew and to step back into history.


Operation Chromite, also known as the Battle of Incheon, was a General MacArthur-led, four-day invasion by U.S. forces – aided by Koreans and Japanese – into territory held by the North in September 1950.  Its success was largely attributed to MacArthur’s unbending determination to move ahead with his plan, his way.  More than merely re-taking a piece of land, Operation Chromite was able to expose a soft spot in the underbelly of the North’s plans for overtaking the entire Korean Peninsula, and is seen as having successfully disrupted North Korea’s significant momentum early in the war.


What I find particularly interesting about this film, though, is that the exclusive focus is not on General MacArthur, played by Liam Neeson, but instead on a group of brave Korean heroes who participated in Operation X-Ray, the intelligence-gathering operation that made the landing of U.S. forces possible.  For South Koreans, I imagine this movie will instill pride, and it will remind moviegoers – both in this country and my own – just how well our two great nations work together, no matter how harsh the conditions or difficult the mission. 


During my visit, director John Lee and co-producer Kyu-chang Lee gave me a sneak peek at the film’s eight-minute trailer.  Though what I saw was still set against a green screen (the effects hadn’t been added yet), I got a real sense of the high quality of the film and how interesting the final product will be.  I also had the chance to tour the set of Kim Il-Sung’s office, the props for which appeared to be straight out of the Soviet era.


John Lee, a Korean-American director and graduate of NYU’s film school, is known for films such as The Cut Runs Deep and A Moment to Remember.  I learned that he grew up in suburban Maryland, near where I used to live.  Co-producer Lee Kyu-chang told me that he played football at the University of Washington (I still like him even though the UW Huskies are a rival of my Stanford Cardinals – just kidding) and noted that he had played a role in casting Liam Neeson for the movie.  The executive producer, Jung Tae-won, is creating a fantastic film, and  the actors, including Lee Jung-jae, Park Chul-min, and Shin Su-hyang, were quite impressive and have so many high quality film credits to their name.  

Thanks again to all for the warm and enthusiastic hospitality during our visit to the set of Operation Chromite. This is a great example of Koreans and Americans working together on a fabulous cultural project.  I can’t wait to watch the final version once it is released later this year!

대사로 일하면서 가장 좋은 점은 학생들과 만날 기회가 많다는 것입니다. 이 학생들이야말로 한국의 미래 지도자들이 될 사람들이죠. 얼마 전 판교 한국외국인학교에서도 그런 기회가 있었습니다. 카이 킴이라는 이 학교 고등학생이자 글로벌 앰배서더 클럽의 대표가 저를 초대했습니다. 제 트위터(@mwlippert)를 팔로우하고 있는데 학교 인권 주간에 와서 강연해달라고 저에게 메시지를 보냈습니다. 



기쁜 마음으로 스케줄을 잡고 한국외국인학교를 방문하기로 했습니다. 이 학교는 산에 둘러싸여 아름다운 경관을 자랑합니다. 제가 방문하던 날, 학생들과 교사, 직원들 모두 저를 열렬히 환영해주었습니다. 



저는 먼저 농담으로 얘기를 시작했습니다. 이 나라에서 공식적으로 미국 대사를 부르는 사람은 딱 두 명인데 한 명은 박근혜 대통령, 다른 한 명은 윤병세 외교부장관입니다. 그런데 여기 한 명이 더 늘었으니 바로 카이 킴입니다! 학교의 인권 주간이었기 때문에 저는 인권의 중요성과 더불어 한 나라의 인권 상황의 척도로써 민주 선거를 하는지를 보는 동시에 여성 및 인종적, 종교적 소수자들, LGBTI 성소수자들과 장애인들이 사회적인 차별을 겪고있지는 않은지 좀 더 깊이 생각해볼 필요가 있다고 말했습니다.  우리는 또한 한 국가의 인권 상황이 얼마나 개선되었는지 보기 위해 인신매매 문제와 노동권을 주목합니다.  국무부에서는 매년 각 국가별로 인권 보고서를 발표하는데 여기에서 보실 수가 있습니다. 



또 제 개인적인 얘기들도 들려주었습니다. 제가 어떻게 미국 정부에서 일하게 었는지도요. 저는 제 길은 공직이다라는 사명감을 갖고 워싱턴 DC로 갔고, 거기서 자리 잡을 때까지 처음 6-7개월을 사촌과 함께 지냈습니다. 원래 의회에서 일해보고 싶었기에 파인스타인 상원의원실에서 일해보겠냐는 제안을 받았을 때 정말 기뻤습니다. 그때만 해도 그 결정이 나중에 제 아내 로빈을 만나게 하고 이후 저를 한국으로 이끌줄은 정말 몰랐습니다. 

제 이야기가 끝나고 학생들이 질문을 했는데 좋은 질문들이 많았습니다. 솔직히 이 중 몇 명은 나중에 정말 훌륭한 기자가 되겠구나 싶었습니다! 학생들은 대외 정책, 외교, 그리고 정부의 결정으로 인한 영향 등 다양한 사안에 관심이 매우 많았습니다. 나이는 아직 어리지만 학생들의 질문은 이들의 깊은 전략적 사고를 잘 보여주었습니다. 아주 인상적이었어요! 

이사회 회장 민 박사님, 제너럴 디렉터 신 선생님, 퀴린 교장선생님 등 모든 분들이 저를 따뜻이 맞아주셨습니다. 이 학교의 학부모 교사회 역시 감사하게도 제가 제일 좋아하는 매그놀리아 컵케이크를 준비해주셨습니다!  



앞으로 한국의 다른 학교에서도 이런 만남의 자리를 많이 갖고 싶습니다. 따뜻하게 맞이해주신 모든 분들께 깊이 감사드립니다! 이런 학생들을 보면 미래의 정치, 국제 관계, 그리고 무엇보다 강력한 한미 파트너십에 큰 희망을 줍니다.
