지난 주말 저는 원희룡 제주도지사의 초대로 “하와이와 제주도가 만나다”라는 주제의 갈라 디너에 참석하기 위해 제주도를 다녀왔습니다. 이번 갈라 디너는 아름다운 여행지로 유명한 하와이와 제주도의 자매 결연 30주년을 축하하기 위한 자리였습니다. 이번 제주도 방문은 정말 환상적이었습니다! 갈라 디너에 참석해 도지사님을 뵌 것 외에, 만장굴도 구경하고, 지역 대학생들과 올레길도 걷고, 감귤 농장도 방문했습니다. 

제주도에서의 즐거운 어드벤처

 그러나 무엇보다 이번 제주 방문의 하이라이트는 다름아닌 해녀 체험이었습니다. 해녀의 위대한 전통에 대한 얘기를 많이 들어서 꼭 한번 직접 보고 싶었거든요. 결국 직접 보는 것에 그치지 않고 제주도 한수풀 해녀학교 입학생들과 함께 물 속에 뛰어들었습니다. 한수풀 해녀학교는 2008년에 설립되어 제주도 해녀 문화를 젊은이들에게 전수하는 역할을 하고 있습니다. 또 제주도가 현재 제주 해녀를 유네스코 무형문화유산으로 지정받기 위해 노력하고 있다는 얘기도 들었습니다. 해녀의 전통이 정말 위대한 문화 유산이라고 생각합니다. 꼭 성공했으면 좋겠습니다. 

 새로 입학한 해녀 학생들과 선생님들의 열정은 정말 놀라웠습니다! 젊은이들도 아주 많았고 심지어 외국인들도 눈에 띄었습니다. 저는 잠수복으로 갈아입고 태왁이라는 도구를 받아들고 곧장 물에 들어갈 준비를 했습니다. 물에 들어가기 전 열린 입학식에서는 입학을 축하하는 축사도 했습니다. 잠수복 입고 연설하기는 정말 처음이었습니다!

 해녀들과의 물질을 30분 정도 마치자, 그 놀라운 기술과 물속에서 작업하는 방식에 감탄하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 출렁이는 파도로 물이 뿌옇게 흐려졌는데도, 각종 해산물들을 포착하고 잽싸게 물 속으로 들어가 갈고리 도구를 이용해 능숙하게 캐냈습니다. 고맙게도 몇 분들은 직접 채취한 해산물 몇 가지를 제 바구니에 담아주기까지 하셨어요.

저는 사실 물 속에서 크게 힘들지 않았고 수온만 적당했다면 훨씬 더 오래 있었을 수도 있었습니다. 같이 물에 들어간 해녀 한 두 분은 저의 수영 실력을 칭찬해 주기까지 하셨습니다. 사실 어렸을 때 호수에서 수영하는 것을 즐겼기 때문에, 이번 해녀 체험이 저한테는 더욱 즐거웠습니다.

마지막으로 가장 즐거웠던 것은 끝나고 다같이 모여 앉아 우리가 직접 잡은 해산물을 함께 맛보는 시간이었습니다. 제주도 현지분들이 다채로운 해산물 요리를 멋지게 준비해주셨습니다. 식사의 반주로 제주도 한라산 소주도 한 잔 곁들였답니다. 절대 잊지 못할 아주 재미있는 경험이었습니다. 이런 멋진 경험을 할 수 있도록 도와주신 모든 분들께 감사 드립니다.  


제주도의 맛있는 해산물 좀 보세요! 
This past weekend I traveled to Jeju Island to speak at the “Hawaii Meets Jeju” gala dinner at the kind invitation of Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong.  The dinner celebrated the great relationship between sister “states” Jeju and Hawaii, two beautiful travel destinations.  The visit to Jeju was fantastic!  In addition to attending the gala dinner and having a great meeting with the Jeju Governor, I was able to explore Manjang-gul Cave, tour the Olle Walk with some local students, and visit a tangerine farm.

The highlight of my trip involved the world-famous female divers of Jeju Island, the haenyeo.  I had always heard about the great tradition of the haenyeo and I wanted to see it first-hand.  On this trip, not only did I get to observe them, but I also had the thrilling opportunity to swim with an inaugural class who were beginning their studies at the Jeju Hansupul Haenyeo School.  The school, established in 2008, has the mission of passing down Jeju women divers’ culture to South Korea’s younger generation.  I understand Jeju Island has been preparing to nominate Jeju Haenyeo as a candidate for the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage designation.  I believe the haenyeo tradition is a great cultural legacy and I truly hope it makes the list. 

The enthusiasm of the new diving students and the instructors was amazing!  It was great to see so many young people, and even foreigners, interested in haenyeo.  I put on a wetsuit, got a special net attached to a flotation device called a 태왁 (Tae-wak), and got ready to get in the water.  Before diving, I gave a few remarks at the incoming class’ opening ceremony.  I have to say it was the first time I gave a speech wearing a wetsuit!

After swimming with the haenyeo for approximately 30 minutes, I can attest to their amazing skills and it was remarkable watching their prowess in the water.  Even in murky and choppy water, they were able to spot the crustaceans and other seafood from the top of the waves, dive in immediately, and catch the animal with a hook very effectively.  They were very kind to me and put some of their catches in my basket.

I am very comfortable in the water and could have swam longer as the water temperature was very pleasant.  A couple of the haenyeo even complimented me on my swimming technique.  When I was younger, I spent a lot of time swimming in lakes, so this was a lot of fun for me.

Finally, perhaps the most fun was sitting down all together to a great meal of the seafood that we had just caught.  Some great Jeju chefs prepared some superb seafood delicacies.  To accompany the meal, we also enjoyed Jeju’s own Hallasan soju.  The entire experience was great, and is something I will never forget.  Thanks to all those who helped facilitate this wonderful experience.

어린이날을 맞아 저의 “두 귀염둥이들” 얘기를 해보고 싶습니다.

비록 제가 늘상 바쁘지만, 그래도 세준이 자는 시간에 맞춰서 귀가해 아이 재우는 걸 도와주려고 노력합니다. (때로는 한미 관계보다 이 일이 더 어렵다니까요!) 한번은 친구가 놀러와서 밖에서 술 한잔 하며 얘기를 나누고 있었습니다. 재미있는 시간을 보내다가도 마지막에는 아내와 문자를 주고 받으며 세준이가 언제쯤 잠자리에 들지 체크하게 되더라구요.

이 글을 읽으시는 분들 중에도 아이가 있으신 분들은 누구나 아이를 재우는 것이 시간이 얼마나 오래 걸리는지 잘 아실겁니다. 솔직히 고백하자면 하룻밤쯤은 이 시간을 피해서 집에 오고 싶다고 생각한 적도 있었고, 몇 번인가는 세준이가 잠들 무렵 귀가해서 애를 깨우는 바람에 아내가 곤란했던 적도 있습니다. 

한 번은 세준이가 잠들고 나서 귀가하려고 시간을 맞추고 있었습니다. 집에 들어가니 세준이는 벌써 꿈나라에 갔고, 제 계획은 완벽하게 성공한듯 했습니다. 저는 안심하고 긴 하루를 마무리하며 잠자리에 들 준비를 했습니다. 그런데 제가 베개에 머리를 대는 순간, 세준이가 깼습니다. 밖에서 재밌는 시간을 보내다 왔기 때문에 밤에 세준이를 돌보는 것은 제 몫이었고, 아내는 다른 일을 마무리 하느라 바빴습니다. 혼자서 거의 두 시간동안 세준이를 다시 재우느라고 고생을 했죠. 한참 안아주기도 하고, 어둠 속에서 기저귀도 갈아주고, 뽀로로와 스타워즈 비디오도 틀어주고, 이야기책도 읽어주고, 장난감도 갖고 놀아주었습니다. 세준이는 조금씩 졸기 시작하다가도 제가 빠져나가려는 순간마다 다시 일어나서 울어댔습니다. 결국 세준이는 그날 밤 자기 침대 놔두고 다른 침대에서 잠깐 잠들었는데, 새벽 3시에 다시 일어나서 돌아다녔습니다. 저도 일어나서 방문을 열었죠. 저는 피곤해 죽겠는데, 요 세준이란 녀석은 저를 지나쳐서 거실로 가더니 자기 기저귀를 빼버렸습니다. 그리고는 세준이가 기저귀도 빼버린 채 거실을 돌아다니다가 마룻바닥에 실례까지 했다고 말하는 아내의 목소리가 들리더라구요. 자기 방에서 혼자 걸어나온 것도 모자라 기저귀까지 빼버리다니요! 이쯤되자 아내와 저는 서로 웃음밖에 안 나왔습니다…

이후 우리는 세준이에게 다시 기저귀를 채우고 재웠습니다. 저는 “이제 드디어 좀 쉴 수 있겠구나” 라고 생각했죠! 그런데 제 생각은 또 빗나갔습니다. 새벽 네 시 무렵, 이번에는 제 또 다른 아들 그릭스비가 일어났습니다. 갑자기 그릭스비가 “우우우우”하고 으르렁대기 시작했습니다. 도대체 왜 그랬는지 지금도 모르겠지만, 저는 그릭스비를 안아주고 제 침대로 데려갔고, 그릭스비는 곧 코를 골며 잠들었습니다. 겨우 소리를 멈추고 잠이 든겁니다. 벌써 네 살인데 아직도 아기같다니까요!  

최근 그릭스비가 뭔가 좀 이상해진 것 같아요. 여자친구를 원하는 건지, 환절기라 계절이 바뀌어서 그런건지, 아니면 그저 종일 놀고 싶은건지 이유는 확실히 모르겠습니다. 요즘따라 으르렁대는 경우가 많아서 혹시 정말 봄을 타는 게 아닌가 싶기도 하구요.

집에서 밤마다 이런 웃지못할 일들이 벌어지고 있지만, 저는 개인적으로 또 일적으로도 열심히 바쁘게 스케줄을 소화하고 있습니다. 최근에 관저에서 리셉션을 열었는데, 세준이도 나와서 영화 ‘행오버’에 출연한 배우 켄 정과 인사를 나눴답니다.

얼마 전 그릭스비와 저는 의장대 행사를 보러 청와대 앞 분수대에 다녀왔습니다. 아내와 저는 또 세준이를 데리고 광장시장도 재밌게 구경하고 왔습니다.

밤에 푹 잘 수 있는 날들이 있었으면 좋겠지만, 세준이과 그릭스비가 제 인생에 가져다주는 기쁨과 행복은 그 어느 것과도 바꾸지 않을 것입니다. 모든 부모님들과 아이들과 함께 어린이날을 축하합니다! 세준이가 밤에 깨지 않고 자준다면 저한테는 정말 좋은 선물이 될텐데요…

In celebration of the past Children’s Day holiday, I thought I would write about the two “little ones” in my life, Sejun and Grigsby.

Even though I have a busy schedule, I try to get home in time to help put Sejun to bed.  (This can sometimes be a harder job than managing the U.S.-ROK relationship!)  The other night, I was out with a visiting friend of mine, and we were sharing stories over drinks.  It was a fun night and I ended up talking to some other friends and when I had the chance, I was texting with my wife, Robyn, trying to figure out when Sejun was going to fall asleep.

Any of you who are reading this and have your own children will know that getting a child to sleep can be a time-consuming process.  I have to confess that I actually was hoping to miss out on this event for one night and a few times I have come home to disrupt Sejun’s bedtime – much to the chagrin of Robyn. 

This night, we had formed a plan for me to come home after he had fallen asleep.  When I eventually got home, my plan seemed to have worked because Sejun was off in dreamland.  Relieved, I got ready for bed after a long day.  However, just as I put my head on the pillow, Sejun woke up.  Since I had been out having fun, it was my duty to take the night shift and care for Sejun while my wife tried to get some work done.  For almost two hours I tried my best to get him to go back to sleep – I carried him for a while, changed his diaper in the dark, we watched Pororo and Star Wars videos, we read some stories, and played with his toys.  He would eventually doze off, but every time I would tiptoe away, he would wake up and start crying.  Eventually, he dozed off on a small bed that we have on the floor (instead of his crib), but around 3:00am he woke up and was walking around.  I also woke up and opened the door.  In my fatigued state, the little guy managed to sneak past me, walk into the living room, and wriggled out of his diaper.  I then hear my wife telling me that she found Sejun standing in the living room, sans diaper, relieving himself on the floor.  Not only had he snuck out of his bedroom, but he somehow managed to wriggle out of his diaper on the way!  Robyn and I could only look at each other and laugh at this point….

After that exciting episode, we put a new diaper on Sejun and got him to sleep again.  “Finally, I’ll get some rest,” I thought!  But I was wrong.  At 4:00 a.m., my other “son” Grigsby woke up.  Suddenly Grigsby was howling- “wooooohwoooohwooooh.”  I’m still not sure what had gotten into him, but I gave him a hug and carried him to bed with me – where he promptly started snoring.  Eventually he stopped howling and fell asleep.  He may be four years old, but he’s still quite a baby!

Something does seem to have gotten into Grigsby lately.  We aren’t sure if he wants to find a girlfriend, if he’s feeling restless with the change in seasons, or if he just wants to play all of the time.  He’s been baying a lot and we think he has a case of spring fever.

Despite all these midnight shenanigans in my house, I have managed to keep a busy schedule, both personally and professionally.  We recently hosted a reception at our residence, and Sejun got to meet the actor Ken Jeong from the Hangover movies.

This spring Grigsby and I enjoyed visiting the fountain in front of the Blue House to watch ROK military processions.  Robyn and I also had lots of fun taking Sejun to explore the wonderful Gwangjang Market recently.

Although I look forward to the days when I can once again sleep through the night, I wouldn’t trade any of it for the joy and happiness these two characters bring to my life.  To all of the parents out there, and all of the children, Happy Children’s Day!  Maybe as a gift to me, Sejun will sleep through the night…
