지난 일요일에는 한국 영화 “국제시장”을 보러 갔었습니다. 스카파로티 한미연합사 사령관과 박선우 부사령관을 비롯한 연합사와 주한미군 관계자들, CJ 엔터테인먼트 관계자들, 미국 대사관 동료들과 함께 한 즐거운 오후였습니다.

   
서울 시내 한 영화관에서 영화를 봤는데, 영어 자막이 달려 있었습니다. 정말 다행이었습니다. 왜냐하면 영화의 대사들이 저의 한국어 수준으로는 따라가기 힘들었거든요. (한국어 대화를 완전히 이해할 수 있을 때까지 공부를 더 열심히 해야겠습니다. 그래도 한국 영화나 TV를 보는 것이 역시 한국어 공부에 큰 도움이 되는 것 같습니다!)  

영화에 나오는 대사도 조금 알아들었고, 또 스토리의 힘이 언어와 상관없이 묵직하게 다가왔습니다. 이 영화는 한국 전쟁 때 헤어진 가족들의 이야기로 시작해서 한국 현대사의 여러 에피소드를 담고 있습니다. 급격하게 변화하는 한국 현대사를 배경으로 한국에서 가족이 갖는 의미와 중요성을 흥미롭게 풀어냈습니다. 영화가 끝날 무렵, 다른 관객들도 깊이 감동했음을 느낄 수 있었습니다.

미국대사관과 한미연합사, 그리고 한국 영화 산업 관계자들과 함께 한 뜻깊은 영화 관람은 서로에 대한 이해를 더욱 증진시키는 재밌고 즐거운 시간이었습니다! 

This past Sunday, I went to see the Korean film “Ode to My Father.”  It was a great way to spend the afternoon with my good friends General Scaparrotti, General Park, and other key members of Combined Forces Command, United States Forces Korea, the U.S. Embassy, and senior executives of CJ Entertainment.  


We went to a local movie theater where we were able to watch the movie with English subtitles.  This is helpful as the dialogue was above my language skills. (I have to study a bit more until I can fully understand the dialogue in Korean -- still watching Korean movies and television is a great way to augment my Korean studies!). 

But, I could understand some of the Korean dialogue and the power of the storyline came through regardless of language.  This stirring movie begins by telling the story of a family separated during the Korean War and includes episodes from modern Korean history.  It tells a very interesting story of the importance and centrality of family in Korea against the backdrop of a rapidly changing and modernizing society.  At the end of the movie, it was obvious the audience was very moved.

By having a group of prominent U.S. and Korean officials from the Embassy and the ROK/U.S. Combined Forces Command and representatives from the Korean film industry, it further strengthened our mutual understanding of each other and made for a fun and interesting cultural outing! 

지난 11월8일, 저는 제 아내 로빈과 함께 한국시리즈 야구 경기를 보러 갔습니다. 그곳에서 한국야구위원회(KBO) 관계자들 그리고 야구팬들과 이야기를 나누면서 즐거운 시간을 보냈습니다. 경기에서 만난 분들이 제가 야구팬인 것을 알게 되었고, 저는 12월9일 2014 골든 글러브 시상식에 초대받는 행운을 얻게 되었습니다. 매년 각 포지션에서 가장 뛰어난10명의 선수들이 골든 글러브 수상자로 선정됩니다. 인상적이고 재미있는 행사였습니다. 이후에 있었던 만찬 행사도 신나고 즐거웠습니다.

저는 아홉번째 골든 글러브를 수상한 이승엽 선수(38세)와 사진을 찍었습니다. 메이저리그 진출 가능성이 있는 강정호 선수도 만났습니다. 두 분 모두에게 행운을 빕니다.


1950년대에는 핵심 야구선수로, 이후에는 감독으로 활약하신 어우홍 감독께서 한국에 야구를 전해준 미국에 감사하다고 말씀하셨습니다. 현재 80대이신 어 감독님은 많은 미국 프로 야구 선수들이 선수 생활을 중단하고 한국전쟁에 참전했다는 얘기를 들려주셨습니다. 이를 통해 미국 선수들이 한국으로 야구를 전했다는 것이었습니다.

저는 한국이 야구를 도입해서 더 흥미진진하고, 고도의 기술을 요하는 신나는 종목으로 만들어준 것에 대한 감사를 드렸습니다. 같은 MLB 규칙이 적용되지만, 흥행가치나, 팬들의 열의, 그리고 뛰어난 선수들의 경기를 관람하는 전반적인 경험은 매우 한국적입니다. 미국이 한국에 야구의 씨앗을 뿌렸지만, 한국인들이 잘 발전시켜서 한국만의 특별하고 독특한 야구를 만들어냈습니다.

구본능 KBO 총재께서 제게 케익을 자르고 그 자리에서 건배사를 해달라고 부탁하셨습니다. 저는 한국어로 시작했지만 영어로 이렇게 마무리했습니다. “미국과 대통령을 대신해서, 뛰어난 기술, 스타일, 유연함을 갖고 인기 많은 미국 스포츠 야구 경기를 보여주신 여러분께 감사드립니다. 오늘 수상자들과 KBO의 꾸준한 건승을 위해 건배를 제의합니다. 같이 갑시다!”

저를 환대해 주시고 또한 한국에서 훌륭한 야구를 만들기 위해 노력하시는 KBO 관계자분들께 다시 한 번 감사드립니다. 한국에 근무하는 동안 더 많은 야구 경기를 볼 수 있기를 기대합니다.

On November 8, I had the opportunity to attend a Korea Series baseball game with Robyn.  While there I had an enjoyable time speaking with representatives (and fans!) of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO).  The people I met at KBO now know that I am a baseball fan, and I was fortunate to receive an invitation to the 2014 Golden Glove Awards celebration on December 9.  Ten Golden Gloves are awarded annually, one each to the best player for each position.  It was an impressive and fun event.  The dinner afterwards was also exciting and upbeat. 


Mr. Eu Woo-hong, one of the key baseball players from the 1950s and a coach afterwards came over and thanked the United States for bringing baseball to Korea.  He is now in his 80s and said that many professional baseball players in the U.S. interrupted their careers and came to Korea to fight in the Korean War.  In this way, these American players brought baseball from the U.S. to Korea.

In turn, I thanked him for the way Korea has made baseball its own and developed it into a fun, highly skilled, exciting game here.  The same MLB rules apply but the entertainment value, the enthusiasm of the fan base, and the general experience watching these high level players here is very Korean.  America may have planted the seed of the game in Korea, but Koreans have grown the crop and reshaped the game their own special and unique way. 
KBO Chairman Mr. Koo Bon-Neung asked me to cut the cake with the Commissioner and make an impromptu toast.  I started in Korean but continued in English saying, “On behalf of the United States of America and the President, I thank you for playing such a popular American game here with such skill, style and grace.  I propose a toast to congratulate tonight’s winners and for the continued success of KBO.  같이 갑시다 (Kachi kapshida)!”



Thanks again to the KBO for their hospitality and for all you do to make baseball great in Korea.  I look forward to enjoying many more baseball games during my time here in Korea.

많은 사람들이 대학 시절에 대한 따뜻한 추억을 갖고 있는데 저 역시 예외가 아닙니다. 그래서 스탠포드 대학 한국 동문회에 초대받았을 때 기쁜 마음으로 참석하겠다고 했지요. 그 곳에서 저는 갓 졸업한 졸업생들부터 여러 씽크탱크와 군, 기업에서 활동 중인 영향력 있는 동문들까지 다양한 사람들을 만날 수 있었습니다. 미국인도 있었고 한국인도 있었으며 한국계 미국인도 있었습니다. 스탠포드 메인 캠퍼스의 모습만큼 다양했습니다.



동문회 참석자 모두가 스탠포드에 대한 좋은 추억으로 하나로 뭉칠 수 있었습니다. 이들을 끌어들이는 스탠포드의 매력은 무엇일까 궁금해지는 순간이었죠. 아마도 아시아 태평양 지역과 미국 동부를 연결하는 곳에 위치한 독특한 지리적 특성이 한 몫 했을 것 같습니다. 미국의 다른 고등 교육 기관들과 마찬가지로 스탠포드는 혁신의 문화, 다양성 존중, 학문의 자유와 대화 중시, 그리고 교과 과정과 더불어 다양한 특별 활동으로 학생들에게 균형잡힌 경험을 제공할 수 있는 학교로 유명합니다. 좀 더 넓혀서 말하자면 미국의 대학들은 미국을 위대한 나라로 만들고 미국과 한국을 이어주는 중요한 역할들을 하고 있지요. 지금 현재 미국에서 공부하고 있는 한국 학생들이 8만 명이고 이들은 우리 학계에 큰 기여를 하고 있습니다.

좋은 저녁 시간이었습니다. 앞으로의 모임도, 그리고 동문들과의 활발한 교류도 기대됩니다. 

Many people have warm memories of their time in college, and I am no different.  So, when I was invited to attend a Stanford University alumni gathering here in Seoul, I gladly accepted.  I encountered an impressive mix of people, from recent graduates to former graduates who are now members of think tanks, the military, and even influential businesspeople.  Some were American, some Korean, and some Korean-American; as diverse as the Stanford main campus can be.


It was a great event as it highlighted to me what Stanford graduates are doing in Korea.  They are involved in commercial projects and people-to-people activities and are important contributors to civil society.  Some of the people I met included Alex Kim, a former #1 ranked NCAA tennis player who is now here working with a sports marketing company.  I heard he used to play tennis with former Ambassador Kathleen Stephens here in Korea.  Another gentleman, Darren Lewis, is the founder of a company called FutureRetro.  I met two American alumni who are working at Korean high schools.  And in another example of what a small world it is, I met someone from my former first year dormitory.  We shared stories about some of our classmates, and it was fun just catching up with folks, some of whom were on campus the same time I was completing my bachelors and masters degrees at Stanford.  I majored in Political Science, received a Masters in International Policy Studies, and even studied in China under the Stanford-Beijing University study abroad program.  My college roommate, Brad Badger, played football at Stanford and went on to play for 11 seasons in the National Football League for the Washington Redskins, Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders, and Arizona Cardinals.  He even got to play in a Super Bowl.   


All of us in attendance shared a common bond of fond memories of Stanford.  Why does Stanford attract these individuals I wondered?  I think it is because it is uniquely situated geographically, a bridge to the Asia-Pacific region and to the East Coast.  Like many of our institutions of higher learning in the United States, Stanford is known for a culture of innovation, embraces diversity, promotes academic freedom and dialogue, and provides a well-rounded experience that involves a balance of academics and an array of extra-curricular activities.  More generally, our colleges and universities are one of the things that make the U.S. great and ties the U.S. with Korea.  There are currently 80,000 Korean students studying in the U.S. and they bring tremendous contributions to our academic communities.
 
During the evening, some people asked me about the status of the bilateral relationship between the U.S. and Korea.  I said that it is in excellent shape, a multi-faceted relationship that has turned into a global relationship.  Stanford’s well rounded students are actively contributing to these ties.  In fact, Assistant Secretary for East Asian Affairs Danny Russel just gave a speech about the U.S.-ROK relationship: http://t.co/hU1bLPa7Fo.

It was a great evening.  I look forward to attending future meetings and having more interaction with the alumni members.

최근 서울에 눈도 내리고 날씨도 추워진 가운데, 저희도 자연스럽게 크리스마스와 연말연시를 준비하며 하비브 하우스를 꾸미기 시작했습니다. 이미 많은 분들이 아시겠지만, 저희 관저는 전통 한옥 양식으로 지어졌습니다. 이렇게 아름다운 한옥 집 안에 크리스마스 장식을 하니 느낌이 색다르더군요. 저는 매일 크리스마스 장식을 두른 늠름한 두 해태상의 모습을 감상하며 흐뭇해하고 있습니다.  


여기 관저를 환하게 밝혀주고 있는 저희의 크리스마스 트리를 소개합니다. 로빈과 관저 직원들 덕분에 트리를 장식과 조명으로 예쁘게 꾸미고, 미국에서 가져온 우리에게 남다른 의미가 있는 장식을 몇 개 더 추가했습니다. 또 작년에 시행착오를 통해 깨달은 것인데요, 트리 아래에 팝콘 장식은 누군가 (그릭스비가) 먹어버리니 하면 안된다는 것입니다.  


저는 연말의 분위기를 한껏 느낄 수 있는 서울시청 앞 크리스마스 트리를  걸으며 지나는 것도 무척 좋아한답니다. 눈까지 더해져 더욱 멋지지요. 그릭스비가 땅에 바짝 붙어다니니 때로는 배가 차가워져서 조금 안쓰럽기는 합니다. 눈오고 추운 날씨에 짧은 다리로 다니는 게 여간 힘들지 않지요. 


이 시기에 미국인들은 가족들을 많이 생각합니다. 최근 저는 어렸을 적부터 즐겨먹었던  저희 가족의 크리스마스 음식을 떠올리게 되었는데요. 저희 어머니는 건강과 운동이 보편화되기 전부터 건강을 중시하고 운동을 하신, 그야말로 시대를 빠르게 앞서가신 분입니다. 제가 성장하던  70-80년대에 하루에 8마일을 가뿐하게 뛰시는 것은 물론이고, 몸에 좋은 음식을 (버터나 크림 없이 저지방식으로) 늘 만들어주셨습니다. 또 달리기를 본격적으로 할 수 있게 자극을 주신 분도 어머니시고요. 하지만 크리스마스 시즌에 만들어주신 건강식을 먹고 그 남은 음식을 먹는 대신, 저희 가족 중 몇 명은 (주로 제가!) 크리스마스 다음날 몰래 스카이라인 칠리 레스토랑에 가서 전통 신시내티 칠리와 치즈 코니를 먹곤 했답니다. 신시내티 칠리는 제 고향에서 아주 유명한 음식인데요, 원래 그리스에서 유래했다고 합니다. 스파게티를 먼저 깔고 그 위에다 이 곳이 자랑하는 유명한 칠리(꽤 단맛이 나요), 치즈, 양파, 그리고 콩을 추가하거나 해서 먹는 음식인데요, 정말 맛있답니다. 


특히 올해에는 어머니와 가족들이 그리울 것 같습니다. 새해에 저희 아기가 태어나면 가족들이 한국을 곧 방문할 수 있기를 기대해봅니다. 

특별한 연휴를 가족과 떨어져 보내는 일은 힘들지요. 로빈과 저는 제가 이라크에서 복무할 때  크리스마스를 같이 보내지 못했답니다. 이번 크리스마스와 연말을 혼자서 보낼  해외에 복무하는 모든 한국, 미국 분들께 따뜻한 위로의 마음을 전합니다. 파병되었거나, 유학 중이거나, 해외에 살고 있어서 연휴에 집에 올 수 없는 분들은 주변분들과 즐거운 시간 보내시길 바랍니다.

그릭스비도 워싱턴 애견 공원에서 만났던 친구들을 그리워하고 있지만, SNS를 통해 소식을 주고 받고 있답니다.  (그릭스비도 트위터 계정 @GrigsbyBasset 이 있다는 사실 아셨나요?)

With the recent snow and cold weather in Seoul, it was only natural for us to start decorating Habib House for the holiday season.  As many of you know, our residence at Habib House is built in the traditional Korean style.  It was interesting decorating for Christmas inside the framework of this beautiful home.  Every day I enjoy seeing the two regal "Haitai", or tiger sculptures, in their Christmas regalia.


So here is our Christmas tree that brightens up our residence!  Thanks to Robyn and the residence staff, we were able to add lights and ornaments to the tree, plus a few ornaments that we brought from the States which have special meaning to us.  Also, we learned the hard way last year that we cannot put popcorn strings near the bottom because somebody (Grigsby) will eat them!


I also love to walk past the Seoul City Hall Christmas tree to get in the holiday spirit.  The snow helps, although poor Grigsby is so close to the ground his belly was a little cold at times!  It is tough to have short legs in the snow and cold.


During this season, Americans often think of their families.  Recently I was remembering our family’s holiday meals growing up.  My mom was way ahead of her time and was health conscious and into working out before it was popular.  She would run eight miles a day and prepare nutritious food for us (with no butter or cream - low fat) in the 1970s and 80s when I was growing up.  She also inspired me to take up running.  But after eating her healthy food for the holidays, instead of eating leftovers some members of my family (primarily me!) would sneak out the day after Christmas to Skyline Chili for some traditional Cincinnati chili and a cheese coney.  Cincinnati chili is very famous in my hometown and has its origins in Greece.  It consists of a bed of spaghetti, topped by their famous chili (which is quite sweet), cheese, and then onions and/or beans.  Cincinnati chili is delicious. 
 

I will miss my mother and the rest of my family this year during the holiday season.  Hopefully some of our family members will visit Korea soon when Baby Lippert makes an appearance in the New Year.

It can be hard to be apart from your family during special holidays. Robyn and I had one Christmas we spent apart when I was in Iraq, and my thoughts go out to all of those serving overseas, both Koreans and Americans, who will be on their own for the holidays.  For those who are deployed, studying in another country or living abroad, but can't make it home, wherever that is, we hope you can make merry with those around you.

Grigsby is also missing his friends from the dog park in Washington, D.C., but is keeping in touch with them on social media.

제가 미국 국방부 아시아 담당 차관보로 근무하던 시절, 합참 참모부장로 재직 중이던 스카파로티 사령관과 함께 일할 수 있는 기회가 있었습니다. 간단히 말씀드리면, 이처럼 중요한 시기에 노련하고 뛰어난 지략과 전략적인 마인드를 가진 분이 여기에 있게 된 것이 우리에게는 큰 행운이라고 생각합니다. 스카파로티 사령관과 폭넓은 대화를 나누며 느낀 바는 한반도의 평화와 안보를 위한 미군과 한국군의 노력에 대해 사령관께서 매우 자랑스러워하고 계신다는 것이었습니다. 이 점에 있어서는 저도 마찬가지입니다. 개인적으로도 사령관께서 저와 같은 오하이오 주(州) 출신이기 때문에, 다른 지역에서 학교를 다녔어도 서로의 고등학교와 스포츠팀에 대해 잘 알고 있습니다. 제 아내와 마찬가지로, 스카파로티 사령관도 열렬한 하키 팬입니다. (제 아내 로빈은 워싱턴 캐피탈즈와 보스톤 브루인스를 응원하고 있습니다!)

저는 박선우 한미연합사 부사령관님과도 예전에 일할 기회가 있었습니다. 폭넓은 경험, 작전 지휘력, 전략적 사고를 갖고 계신 박 부사령님을 저는 깊이 존경하고 있습니다. 합동 작전 전문가일 뿐만 아니라, 한미 공동 국지도발 대비계획의 수립을 이끄신 분입니다. 제가 한국에서 근무하는 기간동안 한미 양국 군간의 지속적이며 생산적인 파트너십을 기대합니다.

지난주에는 제 친구이기도 한 에릭 가세티 LA시장이 시의원들과 무역사절단을 이끌고 서울을 방문했습니다. 가세티 시장과 저는 공통의 친구들이 많기 때문에 소식을 주고 받으며 즐거운 시간을 가졌습니다. 가세티 시장은 로스엔젤레스와 서울 간의 경제적•인적 관계를 증진하기 위해 방한했습니다. 한국은 LA의 3대 교역대상국 중 하나이고, 투자와 관광 산업에도 일조하고 있습니다. 가세티 시장의 아버님도 일정의 일부에 합류하셨습니다. 길 가세티는 유네스코 산하의 물•환경 교육기관인 UNESCO-IHE에 문화대사로 계십니다. 

다양한 회의와 행사로 가득한 바쁘고 생산적인 한 주였습니다. 다음 주에는 어떤 일들이 있을 지 기대됩니다.

Just in time for the season of being thankful, on November 25 U.S. Forces Korea held a wonderful ceremony to welcome me as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea.  The event included an impressive honor guard ceremony.  I am thankful for our troops and the service they provide to the United States and also for the close and deep partnership we have with the ROK military.  Both General Scaparrotti and General Park Sun-woo are outstanding, seasoned leaders.  

I have been fortunate to work with General Scaparrotti previously at the Pentagon when he was the Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and I was the Assistant Secretary for Asia.  Simply put: we are very fortunate to have such a seasoned, intelligent, and strategic individual in this position at this critical time.  Having spoken extensively with General Scaparrotti, I know he is extremely proud of the work being done by U.S. and ROK personnel to ensure peace and security throughout the peninsula, and I echo the sentiment.  On a personal note, General Scaparrotti is from my home state of Ohio and we know each other’s high schools and teams, even though we went to school in different parts of the state.  He is also a big hockey fan like my wife. (Robyn supports the Washington Capitals and the Boston Bruins!)

I have also had an opportunity to work previously with General Park, the Deputy Commander of Combined Forces Command.  I have deep respect for General Park, especially his vast experience, operational leadership and strategic thinking.  Not only is General Park an expert in joint operations, but he led the establishment of the U.S.-ROK Strategic Planning Directive (SPD).  I look forward to the continued productive partnership between the U.S. and ROK forces during my time here on the Peninsula.

After the ceremony, I enjoyed a great working lunch with both U.S. and ROK Flag Officers where we discussed a number of important security and military issues that the alliance is managing at this important time. 


Last Thursday I also attended the Creative Korea 2014 Conference.  President Park Geun-hye gave a speech about the Korean government’s recent policy initiatives and partnerships.  She also discussed the Korean economic drivers to stimulate growth.  There were senior representatives from a wide variety of ministries (many Ministers themselves!) including the Blue House, Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), among others.  There were very interesting exhibitions including innovative technologies dealing with child care, baseball caps made out of Korean traditional masks, and ideas on how to improve efficiency in farming.  There was even a medical exoskeleton to help people walk. The exhibits reminded me of how many exciting opportunities there are for U.S. businesses to partner and work together with Korean companies.


Last week, my friend Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti visited Seoul with several LA Council Members and a trade delegation.  The Mayor and I have many mutual friends and it was great to catch up.  Mayor Garcetti was here to promote economic and people-to-people ties between Los Angeles and Seoul.  South Korea is one of LA’s top three trading partners and a major source of investment and tourism for the city.  The Mayor’s father also joined for part of the trip. Mr. Gil Garcetti is the Cultural Ambassador for the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education.

On Friday, November 21, I had the pleasure of meeting with President Park Geun-hye for the third time.  The first time was in early 2013 when President Park was elected President and I was a member of the U.S. delegation delivering President Obama’s congratulatory letter to President Park with Kurt Campbell and Daniel Russel. 
This time, however, was the most exciting as I was presenting my credentials as the U.S. Ambassador to Korea.  I have been on the other side of the credentialing process in the U.S., standing next to President Obama and helping pass materials to newly-arrived ambassadors to the U.S. in the Oval Office of the White House.  I was definitely more nervous on this side of the table.
When we arrived, I was impressed by the Korean soldiers standing in line to greet me.  I am always grateful to those who serve.  Inside the Blue House, where we were waiting, there were amazing Korean folding screens and beautiful artwork around us. 

We practiced a few times in front of the press, and I hoped I wouldn’t make any mistakes.  Luckily, everything went smoothly.  The ceremony in the Blue House embodied the spirit and culture of Korea, and was both elegant and significant, combining the modern and the traditional.  I feel so fortunate to have had this experience.
As we walked out of the ceremony, President Park asked me in English: “Are you learning Korean?”  I replied in Korean, “지금 저는 한국어 학생입니다. (I am a student studying Korean.)”  I hope President Park thought highly of my efforts.

We then met on a whole host of issues, from our bilateral relationship to our military alliance.  Ours is a true partnership, focused on solving multi-faceted problems regionally and globally.  Of key concern to both countries are issues pertaining to:  health, security, the economy, and people-to-people ties.  It is noteworthy that we are taking on very complicated, difficult challenges, such as the North Korean nuclear issue, and partnering on solving them in a cooperative manner.

I am most grateful to President Park for the substantive and rich dialogue that was also personally warm and for giving me so much of her valuable time.  I know that President Obama thinks extremely highly of President Park and that he enjoyed seeing her recently in Beijing.  Now that I am fully able to carry out my duties as Ambassador, I look forward to getting out in the community and building relationships with the Korean people.

로빈과 저는 서울에서의 맛 기행을 이어가고 있습니다. 제 아내 로빈은 미식가인 편이어서 항상 맛의 지평을 넓혀주기 위해 노력하는데요, 그래서 새로운 한국 음식을 먹어볼 수 있는 기회에 무척 기뻐했습니다.    

이번 주에는 두 명의 한국 인턴을 비롯한 대사관 직원 몇 명과 함께 근처 식당에서 돼지 불고기와 두부찌개를 먹었습니다. 이번에도 역시 맛있었고 즐거웠습니다. 물론 불고기도 맛있었지만, 직접 만든 수제 두부가 정말 일품이었습니다. 저는 특히 맛과 질감이 서로 다른 재료가 한데 어우러져서 이렇게 풍부한 맛을 내는 음식을 무척 좋아합니다. 무엇보다 비지에 매운 양념장을 곁들어먹는 게 아주 좋았습니다. 처음 먹어보는 것이었는데요, 아무것도 버리는 거 없이 두부를 만드는 과정에서 생기는 비지조차 이렇게 맛있게 먹을 수 있다니 정말 놀라웠습니다. 게다가 여러가지 반찬, 함께 나오는 채소까지 포함한 건강한 점심 한끼 가격이 너무 합리적이라 또 한번 놀랐습니다. 


함께 이야기를 나눈 두 인턴들은 매우 흥미로운 배경을 가지고 있었습니다. 여행도 많이 하고 외국에서 살고 공부했던 경험도 가지고 있더군요. 이들처럼 대사관에는 팀의 중요한 일원으로서 한미 관계 강화를 위해 열심히 일하는 뛰어난 능력을 갖춘 한국 직원들이 많습니다. 영어 실력도 출중하고 똑똑한 많은 학생들 가운데서도 가장 뛰어나고 글로벌한 시각을 가진 친구들이 대사관 인턴으로 일하고 있습니다. 한미 간 굳건한 파트너십에 기여하는 이런 분들 없이는 우리는 결코 좋은 성과를 낼 수 없을 것입니다.     

이렇게 건강하고 매콤한 (저는 매운 음식을 좋아한답니다.) 한국 음식을 맛있게 먹었네요. 제가 먹어본 음식을 여러분께 소개합니다!

Robyn and I continue our culinary adventures in Seoul.  My wife Robyn is a bit of a culinary expert in our house and is always trying to expand our palates.  So she was delighted at the opportunity to try out some new Korean dishes.

This week we had the opportunity of tasting pork bulgogi and tofu jjigae at a restaurant near the Embassy with a few staff members including two Korean interns.  As always, the food was delicious and it was fun to eat.  Of course, the meat was tasty, but the homemade tofu was even better, and I am a fan of the way the different flavors and textures are successfully interwoven in such a flavorful way.  I particularly liked adding the spicy sauce to the biji (bean-curd dregs).  I had never had that before.  I am impressed that nothing is wasted and even this side product from making the tofu is excellent.  I was impressed that this healthy lunch, including many banchan (side dishes) and side salads, was so reasonably priced also. 


The two interns we chatted with had very interesting backgrounds and were well travelled, having lived and studied abroad.   They are indicative of the well qualified and talented Korean citizens we have working at the Embassy who represent an important part of our team and help to strengthen the bilateral ties between our two countries.  Our intern program definitely attracts some of the best and brightest globally minded youth from the large pool of English speaking, intelligent students in Seoul.  We could not be successful here without all of these individuals contributing to our strong partnership. 

So here we are trying out healthy and spicy (which I love) Korean food.  Bon appétit everyone!

안녕하세요 여러분.  제 아내 로빈과 저, 그리고 그릭스비는 한국의 다양한 매력을 탐구하느라 여전히 바쁜 나날을 보내고 있습니다.  특히 그릭스비는 바깥 나들이만 했다 하면 너무 많은 관심을 받다보니 늘상 밖에 나가고 싶어하네요. 저는 지난 금요일 2014 서울 김장 문화제에  참여했습니다. 박원순 시장님과의  맛있는 점심식사 후, 운좋게도 김치 명인 김순자 선생님으로부터 여러가지를 배울 수 있었습니다. 전통 한복을 입고 저의 바로 옆에 앉으셔서 김치의 역사를 비롯해 제대로 김치 담그는 법까지 알려주셨습니다. 명인 김순자 선생님은 뛰어난 솜씨도 놀라웠지만 동시에 탁월한 비즈니스적 안목도 갖고 계셔서 인상 깊었습니다. 정말 많은 것을 배운 시간이었습니다.  

제가 매운 음식을  정말 좋아하다 보니 김치 담그면서 먹어보고 싶은 것을 참느라 혼났습니다!  이번 행사에는 열정있는 많은 사람들이 참여해 재미있는 시간을 함께 했습니다.  새 친구도 사귀었는데 이 중에는 탤런트 김호진씨와 김지영씨도 있답니다.

금요일 저녁이 되자 김장 복장을 벗고 해병대 무도회인 ‘Marine Ball’ 참석을 위해 턱시도로 갈아 입었습니다.  미국은 매년 11월 무도회와 케익 커팅식을 열어 해병대의 탄생을 축하합니다.  제가 해군 장교로 근무할 당시 해병대와 긴밀하게 일해본 적이 있어서 해병대에 대해 깊은 존경심을 갖고 있습니다.  대사가 된 지금도 전 세계 외교관들이 충실히 자신의 임무를 수행할 수 있는 것이 이들을 보호해주는 해병대 덕분이라는 것을 잘 알고 있습니다.  해병대 경비대원들은 전 세계 137개 국의 대사관과 영사관에서 근무를 서고 있으며, 이 중에는 주변 치안 상태가 그다지 좋지 못한 곳들도 있습니다.  한국에서는 또 미국 해병대와 한국 해병대 형제들 간에 놀라운 협력 관계가 이어져왔습니다. 이 관계는 오랜 기간동안 성장하고 발전해서 우리 양국의 관계를 더욱 튼튼히 해주었습니다.  그런데 이 날의 또다른 특별한 보너스는 아내 로빈과 행복한 저녁 시간을 보낼 수 있었다는 것이지요.

한국 부임이 좋은 이유 중의 하나가 음식 때문이라는 것은 올 때부터 이미 알고 있었습니다. 서울에 오기 전부터 이미 한국 음식을 여러번 먹어보았고, 가장 최근에는 한국어 수업도 할 겸 워싱턴 DC 외곽에 위치한 버지니아 애넌데일에서 한국 음식을 즐겼습니다. 가능한 한 많은 한국 음식을 다양하게 먹어보겠다고 스스로 다짐을 했는데, 이는 동시에 제가 운동을 꾸준히 해줘야한다는 얘기죠. 그래야 살이 너무 많이 찌지 않을테니까요. (다행히 얼마 전 근처 헬스 클럽에 등록을 해서 일요일 오후에 열심히 근력 운동을 했답니다!)  서울에 와보니 퓨젼 한식이 많아서 흥미롭습니다. 한식이 이제 지역과 세계의 다른 음식들에게도 영향을 주고 있습니다. 전통 음식들이 여전히 제자리를 지키고 있으면서, 동시에 창의력이 돋보이는 새로운 음식들이 외부의 영향을 받아 속속 탄생하면서 맛있는 음식이 더욱 많아지고 있습니다.

어제는 로빈과 서울 빛초롱 축제에 갔었습니다. 한지로 만들어진 창덕궁 인정전과 한국 전통 악기들, 그리고 이순신 장군의 거북선이 청계천에서 은은하게 빛나고 있습니다. 혹시 여기 가실 분들은 저희 대사관이 준비한 자유의 여신상도 꼭 관심있게 봐주세요!

지난번 블로그에 댓글을 많이 달아주셔서 정말 기뻤습니다. 곧 답글을 달도록 노력하겠습니다.  스케줄이 되는 대로 한국어를 열심히 공부하고 있는데, 여러분이 써주신 글을 읽어보는 것이 저한테는 좋은 연습이 되고 있습니다. 여러분의  제안도 정말 감사합니다.  저와 로빈, 그릭스비 모두가 여러분과 앞으로 더 많이 소통하고 이야기 나눌 수 있기를 기대하고 있습니다.

Hello everyone.  Robyn, Grigsby and I continue to be busy exploring all Korea has to offer.  Grigsby, in particular, gets so much attention when he’s out in Seoul that he wants to go out for walks all the time.  As for me, I attended the 2014 Seoul Kimchi Making & Sharing Festival on Friday.  After a nice luncheon with Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon, I was fortunate enough to learn from kimchi master Kim Soon-ja.  She was seated next to me in traditional clothing and told me the history of kimchi and the proper way to make it.  I was incredibly impressed not only by Master Kim Soon-ja’s culinary skills, but also her business acumen.  I learned a great deal from Master Kim.    
Since I love spicy food, it was all I could do not to eat the kimchi while we were preparing it!  In general, there were many enthusiastic people having a fun time there. I made some new friends, including actor Kim Ho-jin and actress Kim Ji-young.

Friday evening, I changed out of my kimchi making clothes and into a tux for the Marine Ball.  The United States Marine Corps Birthday is celebrated every November, with a traditional ball and cake-cutting ceremony.  I have great respect for the Marine Corps, having served closely with them when I was an officer in the U.S. Navy.  As Ambassador, I know that diplomats worldwide would be unable to perform their duties without the Marines who protect them.  Marine security guards are currently posted at embassies and consulates in 137 countries – many in the roughest neighborhoods in the world.  Here in Korea, there has been amazing collaboration between the U.S. Marines and their ROK Marine brothers.  This has grown and developed over the years and further deepened the connection between our two countries.  Naturally, the other nice part of the evening was enjoying an elegant night with my wife, Robyn.

I knew when coming here that one of the best parts of the job was going to be the food, as I had eaten Korean food many times before coming to Seoul – most recently in Annandale, Virginia (right outside of Washington D.C.) as part of Korean language studies.  I have made a commitment to try as many different Korean foods as I can.  This means that I also need to keep working out so that I don’t end up gaining too much extra weight.   (The good news is that I joined a local gym here and had an excellent workout on Sunday afternoon – lifting weights!)  It is so interesting to me in Seoul, the fusion that goes on with Korean food.  Korean food is influencing other foods regionally and globally.  At the same time, although the traditional foods remain in place, new creative dishes are being created with outside influences here also, making for delicious results.

Finally, yesterday Robyn and I had a chance to visit the Seoul Lantern Festival.  It was amazing to see Changdeok Palace’s Injeongjeon Hall, Korean traditional musical instruments, and Admiral Yi’s turtle ship rendered in Korean traditional paper and lit up on the Cheonggyecheon.  If you stop by the festival, please check out our Embassy’s Statue of Liberty lantern!

I was delighted that many of you made comments on my previous blog, and I look forward to responding soon.  I’m studying Korean as much as my schedule allows and reading your posts is good practice for me.  Thank you for your suggestions.  Robyn, Grigsby and I look forward to more interaction and insights from you.
